Advent 4211. A few questions.

Don't know if this thread is suited to exclusively Asus EEE-PC's or to all Netbooks in general (difficult judging by it's size). If it's not the latter, let me know and I'll put this in a new thread.

I'm thinking of getting a Advent 4211 (yes, owning a Macbook and HP Pavilion isn't enough), but just have a few questions.

    (a) How will the 4211 look when hooked into an external VDU? And I don't mean a PC monitor.. a 37" TV capable of 1920 x 1080. Obviously it won't take advantage of the full resolution but it should scale to something decent. My plan is to use it during the day, and then hook it up to the TV at night and use it.
    (b) Is the Pixmania deal with a 2 year warranty for it for €349 (about €363 with shipping) still the best going around? Apart from being VAT registered and using PCWB.ie obviously.
    (c) Does installing more RAM / larger disk definitely void the warranty? Have read conflicting stories from it definitely does (unlike the EEE-PC) to people saying there's no sticker or seal on the inside to show the machine has been opened.
    (d) Any opinions on whether I should fork out extra for the Asus 1000H?

    Thanks in advance lads.

Am in no real rush for it so gonna wait til a Pixmania voucher inevitable pops up and nab one then.

Should be ok, this thread might help http://forums.msiwind.net/general-discussion/absolute-maximum-screen-resolution-t954.html

As long as you're not worried about dealing with pixmania in the event of something going wrong (and you should be worried ) then yes. Otherwise head north and get it for €354 in a currys or pc world in NI.

Not 100% on this as there are conflicting reports on the web but seeing as you need to remove the entire bottom half of the machines casing to upgrade the ram i'd say it's rather likely.

Depends entirely on what the increased upgradeability, size and battery-life mean to you. Personally I'd actually hold off till late october to see what the new Toshiba, Samsungs etc. are like.

    Cheers, that'll do nicely!

Yeah, have heard horror stories from people about Pixmania. But I've bought maybe 5 - 8 things off them, and never had a problem with them whatsoever.

Would ideally prefer the 2 year warranty as opposed to save a couple of euro up North.

    I assumed it would alright..

Might just do that so... like I said, I'm in no real rush. Are they planning on announcing a range next month, or is this all speculation?

I had a number of really good dealings with pixmania but then one bad one that ran over 3 months (hdd vanished in transit) and my mate got stung from them with their ebay dealings on wiis at xmas so i'd avoid as much as possible

    Upcoming models include:

    Lenovo IdeaPad S10 http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/04/lenovo-goes-netbook-with-ideapad-s10/
    Samsung NC10 http://eeepc.net/samsung-launches-the-nc10-netbook/
    Toshiba NB100 http://eeepc.net/toshiba-makes-the-nb100-official/
    Packard Bell dot http://eeepc.net/packard-bell-announce-their-first-netbook/

and i've a feeling there'll be more to come

Yeah, they'll probably be rolling out new models practically with their popularity. But nothing really above to make me wait..

The Samsung and Packard Bell are both very promising. The Samsung moreso - rumoured to be about £369 but the 6 cell battery and SuperBright LED might make me wait. The Packard Bell was good until I read about "additional extras can include a 6 cell battery, a webcam and 3G module". Mo' money!

Moved into it's own thread. I think the other thread works best as a general chit chat about the whole netbook range and have any specific questions that could result in more than 1 post answer in to a separate thread, otherwise it just gets lost among the noise in the mega thread.

Upgrading the ram doesn't void the warranty (and shouldn't in any pc if I had my way), no idea about the hard drive though. If you could change it without it being noticed (eg not having to remove one of those void stickers) then I can't see why you couldn't just replace it and swap it back in if you have a problem.

Edit: The 1GB ram that is installed is soldered to the motherboard and there is a free slot for upgrading. So you only need to get a 1GB stick to upgrade to 2GBs. Also I'd probably go with the asus 1000 for no reason other than I think the black ones look the shít.

I upgraded the memory and Hard Drive, there was no warranty stickers to see, it was all very easy to change out, and the empty ram slot was handy. I'd recommend the advent. But i'm biased!
Tbh, i'm not too sure what to expect from the likes of samsung Toshiba etc, i waited for the Dell mini 9, only to be disappointed, since it was just an eee 901 copy, minor tweeks yes, but more or less the same spec wise.

Cheers for the new thread AC.. but my plan for buying the Advent has been dashed by my purchase of this! :o

Still, a Netbook would probably be a purchase early next year so opinions will still be considered.
