Hi all, I'm a 35 year old, responsible guy in Kimmage, Dublin 12 who's very interested in shooting and hunting. I've never been before though and would love to help out if anyone is going either deer stalking or bird shooting. I've meant to go a couple of times with friends but something has always come up and they haven't gone in the end. Alternatively, if someone can point me in the right direction to a local club to join, that would be helpful too. I used to shoot targets 20 years ago in the cadets and would love to get into some outdoor shooting activity. The prospect of shooting and cooking the prey is much more interesting to me than target shooting. If I make a few new friends along the way, then all the better.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Kev

Before you head out you could sharpen your skills free of charge on Saturday.

you may find it diificult to get an invite if 1: you have never hunted and 2: you would be a stranger. my parents always told me not to play/talk to strangers when i was growing up..............and you will find people who hunt tend to stick to those rules........if you were to ask everyone on here , most will say they have only hunted with friends or someone introduced through a friend. The idea of walking in the woods with firearms and a total stranger is not very appealing to most.

I have to agree with Big Al there. Though you are a genuine fella and you most probobly are there are very few people who are going to walk into the middle of nowhere with a gun and a chap they dont know.

Even if i was thinking of selling a gun dog i wouldnt meet at my home because then naturally if the person wasnt genuine they would know where you lived and where to rob your house for your guns.

best word of advice is join a shooting range or get to know a few fellas and see then when they get to know you will they take you out.

The best way to get an into to the shooting scene from scratch might be to volunteer to do some beating on a driven shoot. I'm sure you would meet lots of bods with a great interest in shooting and in gundogs. You might have a good day out anyway.

you might also think about going out with a pack....hounds or beagels as they have regular meets and welcome visitors. Could be a good way of meeting people who are involved in hunting.

Ha! Thanks for your advice and info. I do understand that going with a complete stranger with a gun is probably not appealing to most, especially when his username is kaizer_soze. (I knew I should have gone with Osama Bin Laden instead!) I'd be more than happy to help out as a beater at a shoot. I'll try and find any clubs that are around the Kimmage area as well.

Any other advice or pointers are very welcome.

Beaters on a shoot, is more an English thing and not really done in Ireland.

Most Irish hunting is walked up with a well trained dog shooting wild birds, or just a day walking around with a well trained dog and shooting nothing!

There's a lad with commercial shoot in Ballivor who might be interested in beaters. I don't know but you might be able to get his contacts through the NARGC or in a publication like the Shooters Digest.

Another option is try to locate a few lads who do a bit of walk up shooting and beating for foxes.

The intial steps are the hardest, once you get to a decent level of familiarity with one or two lads and a couple of farmers you'll be surprised how quick things can move.

Thanks for all the help. I went out over a week ago with one of the members of the board here. I learned a lot from him in how to be responsible, safe, lawful and how to stalk. He showed me how to field-dress and skin the kill. I downloaded a great video too on how to butcher the carcass. We bagged a lovely deer and my freezer is now full of beautiful fresh meat. I'd like to thank Rich for trusting me and having the patience for teaching me. I learned a lot from you. I understand why some people are reserved on here about bringing people, but the more people who are helpful in bringing others into any sport, the stronger that sport becomes.
I'm really looking forward to going out again and learning more about this pursuit. Thanks again. K

Here's the first of 3 videos that I used for butchering the carcass if anyone is interested. You should be able to find video 2 and 3 from the same link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tudPGNL9LK0&feature=email
