Never in history have so many people had so much information, so many tools at their disposal, so many ways of making good ideas come to life. Yet at the same time, so many people, of all walks of life, could use so much help, in both little ways and big.

In the midst of this, new studies are reinforcing the simple wisdom that beyond a certain very basic level of material wealth, the only thing that increases individual happiness over time is helping other people.

In other words, helping helps everybody, helper and helped alike. The question is: what would help? And help most?

At Google, we don't believe we have the answers, but we do believe the answers are out there. Maybe in a lab, or a company, or a university -- but maybe not.

Maybe the answer that helps somebody is in your head, in something you've observed, some notion that you've been fiddling with, some small connection you've noticed, some old thing you have seen with new eyes.

If you have an idea that you believe would help somebody, we want to hear about it. We're looking for ideas that help as many people as possible, in any way, and we're committing the funding to launch them. You can submit your ideas and help vote on ideas from others. Final idea selections will be made by an advisory board.

Good luck, and may those who help the most win.
I think its great to see big companies trying to make a real positive difference in the world - more of them should take a leaf from Google's book. Yes, their "Don't Do Evil" motto has come under criticism, but considering they are one of the worlds biggest companies, publicly listed etc, they are well ahead of the game compared to any other the other big dogs... At least they are making a decent effort!

Always amazes me how some twat post totally unfnny and stupid replies can totally ruin the chances of starting a decent discussion... what a pity, this is only a discussion board...

Any good ideas I'm keeping for myself to submit to Google, like tinfoil hats to stop the American HAARP weapons from damaging us.

The PAUB forum. That could catch on.

On topic though, Google are one of those companies that will eventually rule the world in a terminator kind of way, so these acts of selfless generosity arouse suspicion as to why they REALLY want to have a photo from space of everybodies homes.

In the meantime though, I enjoy their services numerous times a day, so seeing as the world probably wont implode anytime too soon, I'll continue to enjoy them. Albeit with one eyebrow always raised in suspicion.

Well someone thanked me for my contribution :p

You just picked the wrong forum for serious discussion.
If it's any consolation, it's an interesting article, and I assumed it would be Google centric in the I.T. sector, not rolling barrels devices for transporting water in third world countries.

Just a pity there's no prizes for the winning entries :)

I enjoyed your post. Good to see a company putting something back. Bill Gates should have done similar.

My idea is google should evenly split all the money it has between everyone on the planet. That would help everyone. I doubt they would go for it though.

Yes, but they're in such a powerful position that they can piss away a fortune and it doesn't matter. It's easy to make a "positive difference" when you're still going to be a multibillionaire at the end of it.

you do know that tinfoil hats are naturally optimised for reception and transmission of frequencies in the 1.3GHz band which is usually reserved for governments don't you ?

Surely that would have fuck all impact though. If everyone was given 2 million quid at the same time, then 2 million would be worth zilch, and everyone would be worse off.

Google is worth a lot of money but they wouldn't have enough to give every person on the face of the planet 2 million. It'd probably only work out at €50 each or something.

Exactly. Google are a commercial enterprise just like any other despite their posturing, and if they can come across even more touchy feely and caring by doing this, and if as a result people to whom such things matter use their services more, they get more advertising income. If it costs them a couple of million quid/dollars/euros in to the bargain so what, that's small change to them, plus they get to keep whatever ideas people give to them for free as well.

I know.. the American dollar sign in his username gives it away.
He has already been listed as a collaborator.

Yeah, a tin foil hat is like a Faraday cage, all the electromagnetic waves/charge is repelled to the edges.
I have my tin foil protection sewn into a baseball cap.

When stocks of aluminium run artificially low in a few years time, it's part of their plan to eliminate the tin foil defense.

Based on the true story of college professor and part-time inventor Robert Kearns' (Greg Kinnear) long battle with the U.S. automobile industry. When Bob invents a device that would eventually be used by every car in the world, the Kearns think they have struck gold. But their aspirations are dashed after the auto giants who embraced Bob's creation unceremoniously shunned the man who invented it.

The invention in question? The Windshield Wiper. Imagine if you gave google some simple little idea and they went off and made millions off it. Youd be right pissed too.
