I pay 40 euro for 20 140gr SP Hornady custom interlock rounds, is this a good or a bad price for 6.5x55, because i dont really shop around for ammo, what do you pay?

    Tiny

I tend to price around quite a bit and buy a few hundred when I go. I am using .243 so cant comment directly on 6.5, but I imagine the same dealer will be cheap in either caliber.
I have a little spread sheet on this and I will PM you.

the 25 06 is ideal for our hunting hear ,give the 120gr B tip a try in the 6.5 .there giving better results on deer that the 140 grainers ,you will get away with the 6.5 on soft fallow, but mr sika will take the 6.5 and run with it

Was with a mate who paid £31 GBP today for 20 Norma 6.5x55, that works out at approx 39 euro so I would say your price is ok

Ive used Remington and Federal 140 grain in 6.5*55 found both of them good rounds, i paid around 30 euro a box when i bought them, the Norma 120 grain ballistic tips are more expensive. not a lot of gunshops stock 6.5 due to the fact that it is not as popular as other rounds in ireland.

I bought some in Waterford Outdoor and Angling Centre recently at €29/20 (his last lot and they were going up in price he said) for 140gr Federal Powershok.
And I've got some 139gr Sako's (racehead) at €34 in Youghal but I think from looking at their brochure that they are target rounds even though they are SPBT rounds.

How do you find the Hornady's??
And would you get a discount if you buy say 100 rounds?

Tiny, where did you get the hornadys?
I'd like to try the faster loads that norma and hornady do for the 6.5 and maybe experiment with lighter pills like the 120gr JW recommends.
By the way where is John Lambert based JW?

some of the biggest ****ups iv seen over the years have been with 6.5 .Sure it kills alot of deer each year , but it is not favoured by any one that i know who cull a lot of deer .i know a stalker in wicklow who takes out 40 or more clients each season ,if they arrive with a 6.5 he takes extra care with them .he will tell you the same about this cal .it will get you into trouble quicker than get you out of it .i am not a fan but each to there own .

Is it true that it drops off very quickly in trajectory beyond a given distance, more so than other calibres?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72 ✭✭hazza

    IWM
I'd say your right about the 6.5 dropping off more than other calibres, but from the ballistics tables (Norma give a good one - http://www.norma.cc/sortimentjakt.asp?Kaliber=9&Lang=2&Kalibernamn=6,5x55# [Pull Down Ballistics Tab]) the lighter bullets are comparable to other calibres.
I guess the advantage of the 6.5 is the capability to go right up to 156grain rounds.

I killed every deer I shot with 120gn norma 6.5x55 BT. Head shots/neck and a few heart lungs.
I favour the head as it leaves a cleaner carcass.
i shoot for the pot :D

I now use .308 Hornady but that was only coz I changed rifle as my sako75 was too heavy i found.

I have a rem VTR .308 and it is accurate enough for bunnies at 200 but compact and handy for stalking through cover. oh yeah and its green, My favourite colour :)

+1 norma 120bst are fantastic, bullet placement is key with any round/animal

Just out of curiosity guys, this is a round I would love to try (must get up to Stakleums), did you need to re-zero and was there much adjustment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 295 ✭✭sixpointfive

yes i always check zero regularly whether i change ammo or not, the 120bst will shoot a bit higher and flatter than 140gr soft point but i must warn you if you are hungry with the shillings you wont like the norma bullets too much, i think the last box i bought were somewhere in the region of €45 for 20, BUT worth every penny and there is no comparison with anything i have used to date.
