There should be a CD in the original box with iTunes on it. You'll need to install that onto your PC/Laptop. When that's done connect the Nano with the USB cable. If there's no CD for iTunes you should be able to download it from the apple website somewhere.

When you connect the Nano first you'll have to name it set date time etc...!

If you want to buy songs off iTunes you'll need to create an account which can be done through the homepage.

    No illegal downloading of course;)

All you really need to download is itunes 8.0, which can be done by clicking the download button on the left side of the page you linked. Just untick the two boxes above it, if you don't want to eneter an email address.
When it's finished downloading, just run it and it will install. After install, put a cd in your computer and i think it will actually prompt you if you want to copy the music to itunes - just select this.
After you haave done this, connect the Nano. It will give you the option to register or ignore. Once that is done, it will start to sync the music to the player and your done. Bit daunting the first few times, but after that you're grand
