Converting Speakers to phono

I have an old dvd changer system with surround sound. The speakers connect to clamps on the back of the unit (Panasonic SA-HT80). Is it possible to change these speakers to phono as the unit only supports surround sound from the dvd's it plays and nothing else while the TV has output for phono surround sound.

I can wire it up without a problem but am unsure if the unit acts as an amp or something.

    in a quick word, no.

those speakers are what are called passive (not mains powered) they get their power from the amp. for the phono connection from the back of the tv, you'll need an active pair of speakers.

The HT80 doesnt have a surround sound input so you'll only get left & right stereo from it when using it with an external input.
