    Hi there,
I'm planning on spending some time over the next few days/weeks learning about markets and investments. My plan is to then invest somewhere between 7k and 10k. I have no real knowledge at the minute so would really appreciate some useful links about the Irish market, international markets, how to buy and sell shares etc. Thanks for any replies!

would just reiterate Janet's words. I am a professional trader and I would strongly advise : Spend alot of time getting to know the markets before you do anything. Even in a bull market a novice can find themselves busting their account out pretty fast without proper appreciation and understanding of risk and account management. Given that the markets haven't been in this kind of condition since the 1930s ...well u know the rest .. and it ends with the poor house...I always find it interesting how many beginners look for online accounts with the cheapest commission ..I would suggest unless you have excellent knowledge of the markets in general and know how to trade markets very well, align yourself with a good trader ..Your commissions wont be as low but i will bet you even in the short run you will fare alot better in the P+L ..Good luck with your trading!!
The kinda sites I would recommend are:
    www.cnbc.com
www.ft.com (ALPHAVILLE -blog on the ft each day giving a run down on all mkt developments)
    www.marketwatch.com
    www.sharewatch.com
    www.briefing.com
    www.timesonline.co.uk/business
    www.bloomberg.com
and you can get the irish broker's daily reports posted on rte's website each day for what they are worth..sometimes they contain informative stuff !!

Here's a link to a recent interview with Warren Buffett. The discussion is on his decision to buy into Goldman Sachs.

I think it's always useful to get an insight into someone like Warren Buffett: a long-term investor who has demonstrated an approach to investing that's been successful for him for many decades.
