I know there is a thread about Russian and German (which I posted in) but that is really just about doing two languages together and not the courses themselves.

I will be doing German but am considering applying for a transfer to do Russian but need more info pls! If any student doing either course could tell me their views on it, it would really be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't do either language myself, but I have friends who do Russian and they love it. There are quite a few hours 'cos obviously most people are learning the language from scratch, and in first and second year there's a Russian area studies course which deals with some of the history, culture etc of Russia. From what I've been told, the department are really friendly and everyone seems to really enjoy the course. European Studies and TSM are mixed in together and everyone seems to get on great. As for Russian itself, it's challenging (different alphabet!) but then all languages are, and you'll get great rewards out of it if you put the work in :)

Thankyou so much for the info. German would be the safe option as I did it in school, but I've always loved Russian history and I've already started to learn the alphabet. I think I'll take the plunge and go for the challenge but if anyone has more info feel free to reply.

Thanks again for the insight :).

It's nothing, you can learn it in a few hours. The pronunciation is a bigger hurdle than the Cyrillic alphabet IMO.
