Just wondering further to previous talks, whether people would like to have their own DCU board forum? No sweat either way, but currently have a bit of free time before lectures, a nice domain name, hosting and a Vbulletin license.

Will cater to ALL ideas on the forum (skins, apps, links etc)

What do you all think? Think enough people would be interested? Would you be prepared to "spread the word" so that it would be somewhat useful?

    ^_^

    Cheers.

Would you like your very own DCU boards? 16 votes

That is an idea I would like to get across :) This board will be run by DCU people FOR DCU people. Hence all events etc will be relevant to this course, guides for DCU.

I'll see what some others think, and if it seems popular then we shall all give it a go :)

^_^ I was trying to keep it light.

No need for hot girls, it seems they have all chosen DCU, so no need for one here ^^

Speaking of which, I never knew Dublin was such a nice place. Coming from Kenmare (Bristol before that) didnt help prepare me for the size of this place :D The people atm have been exceptional, though I must confess I havent helped my case by being shy :o Next week to resolve that XD

Seems pretty pointless if ya ask me.

We've got life.dcu.ie and this forum, both are moderated by DCU students.

Thats cool, this is what this thread is for :)

Hopefully the site will be unique in the way DCU people shape it :)

    Thanks for your input ^_^

p.s my domain name is easier to remember than life.dcu.ie (mine is only 2 digits long ;) )

    www.dc.u?

the big question is how many would use it....

That is THE biggest question :D. Without a significant proportion of people using it, it could easily be "teh fail".

We shall see what more people say :)

DCU students are highly apathetic. They already have life.dcu.ie as someone else mentioned but most don't even bother using that. Don't really see the point in another forum tbh and most students probably won't use it

    +1

In the end of the day, the DCUSU already have life.dcu.ie. That site pretty much describes everything you've suggested in this topic, and life.dcu.ie already has the added advantage of much more easier ways of advertising the website to students, so I don't see how a new one would take away from that tbh

Yes I think it would really help! We could have sub forums for Clubs, Societies, First Year questions, Events etc which would make the forum a lot easier to navigate.

waste of time - it will only serve to dilute the content of existing boards.

Thanks for your input. Tbh life.dcu isnt that great tbh. Sure its good for the updating etc but its not really personal personal in terms of people chatting (unless I have missed something).

Thanks for your thought though, a clear picture is definitely needed :)

Help suggest some more stuff then ;):D . tbh if 20 boards members mentioned it to their friends etc then it wouldnt take long for everyone to know the site. The problem as you have rightly seen is that without fresh content it would be next to useless..... Something that would have to be rectified. I would be willing to take on board ALL suggestions etc

Good suggestion and thanks for the support. Basically anything will be possible ^_^ as long as I can do it on vBulletin :)

Then maybe that is the problem. Maybe one kickass board needs to come alone and to collect all students in one board where everyone can interact. This board is good but limited, having a DCU specific will allow all to go into one space.

Please feel free to suggest any ideas to me on the board or via PM

good idea OP, although how you split up the forums and moderate it will decide whether its successful or not.

life.dcu.ie is abysmal. Its the SU's personal chat room.

Throw that in with the fact the your real name appears after every post and you're not going to get a lot of people using it. The internet's best feature is anonymity.

Splitting it up by school, and then by year would prob be the way to go. if you have it too course-specific then your going to be left with a lot of empty forums. Best of luck with the site if you do go ahead with it, like everything in DCU getting students to participate in anything is a tough job.

There will be many opportunities for everyone :)

Just to bounce the idea of you dudes, what would you think of an identification system? Before everyone starts panicking :P, tis just some musing.

If people were to provide some form of identification to claim a username (maybe have a table where people sign up) then people would be confident that they REALLY were talking to DCU students and that people would be more respectful on the forums ;)

Obviously hand in hand I would promote the mantra that there would NEVER be any collection of information, no authorities would have any forum of identification and that people can be removed fully whenever they want.

Having this system would practically allow all of us to be moderators, and if people were forwarned enough, then a large group would sign on the first day, a cue for getting to know more people and maybe even working a drink out of it :D

    Any more ideas people?

I would rely on guidance from everyone :)

I personally cannot see the attraction of life.dcu.ie :o

I understand the wishes for anonymity, and that is something I have ALWAYS promoted on the internet :)

Anything used to identify people would NEVER be released to anyone. However I could still see some concerns, so maybe just a case of people flashing their card and signing up without any numbers etc being taken.

    Looking for guidance :o

thats really not going to work, your going to have to stick with a hassle-free web based sign up.

you could restrict signups to *.dcu.ie email addresses. But again, you'll have to be very careful with who can see this info.

Hmm you are probably right, good thinking. The DCU email address might work but then again might not. An idea would be to ask the IT admin to send an email to them all :) , which would also help in the promotion of the site.

Am entertaining all ideas atm :) so please feel free to suggest ANYTHING.

I don't know how feasable an idea this is, but what about contacting Niall and discussing integrating the two?
Would it be possible to link the two i.e similar design/style, and have life.dcu.ie linking to forums, and vice versa.
Also, is the domain name fixed? Could you have say, forums.life.dcu.ie linking to the vbulletin page?
    Just some thoughts =]
personally I think this forum is quite good, even the lecturers know it lol
How about putting efforts into promoting this forum?

A way to recieve funding would to be to set up a DCU society (say, BoardsSOC) which would run and maintain the site. By going the society route, you would receive funding from DCU which could help cover promotion costs (flyers, posters, events etc). Obviosuly there are certain conditions that you would have to follow to receive this funding, such as having a certain minimum number of members initially signed up.

You could run the forum as a separate entity open to all DCU students whether they join the society or not, but any subsidised events organised by the society would only be open to paying members. If the events were actually of a good enough quality, then this would also act as an incentive for regular users to pay the 8 euro to join up to take part.

Also, I suggest getting in touch with RedBrick for help with hosting the site and other technical advice.

It also mightn't be a bad idea to get some of the more popular societies on board with a view to hosting a private forum for them. This would provide an additional revenue stream and increase the amount of users using the site.

Hmmm, this is most sound advice, thank you very much. That bit about other societies is also very very interesting. So you propose one main forum with its sections, but also another X amount of sections only accessible to those with the relevant permissions (eg all the XYZ club members would have access to the main part plus another part).

Nanaki, this forum is good yes, but its just not.......personal enough for DCU. You could be absolutely right, but I feel that DCU needs a focused forum.
