Viewing Angle

How "accurate"/realistic are manufacturer's specifications for viewing angles? I see LCD's with angles of up to 176 degrees. Is it actually possible to view the TV at such an extreme angle, or do you get blackness (like you would viewing a laptop from a large angle but to a lesser extent)?
For my current set up (which is more or less constrained by the size of the room and so can't really be changed), there will be situations where I will want to watch TV from positions up to 80 degrees from the dead centre (in front of the TV) position. I assume I would be better off going for a plasma in this case, or would a reasonably good LCD do the job?
    Any recommendations for a 32"?
    Thanks in advance.
