I think I know the answer to this one but would like confirmation!

Playing in a comp this am and my playing partner hit a stinker from the fairway which happened to hit me standing around 30M ahead and to the side of the fairway.

I see lots in the rules about balls striking the striker, bags, etc but nothing about this. I am assuming no penalty on my part and that he plays his a lies (as it happens he felt so bad he scratched the hole)

    Any thoughts?

Ah in fairness to the guy it was one of the weirdiest shots ever and if the ground could have opened up it would have....

These things happen from time to time

No penalty and play it as it lies because he was a fellow competitor in a strokeplay (type) event.
Had it been matchplay, he could decide to play it as it lies or else cancel the stroke and elect to replay from the same place..
Rule 19... Your fellow competitor is considered an outside agency so rule 19-1 applies

Had he been your partner (fourball/foursomes/team) then its a penalty though. Same as hitting your bag/equipment/self.

No not playing parter as it was a singles comp and thats why I thought there was no penalty for me as there was not a whole lot I could do in the circumstances
