There is an insurance company in Carlow right now, they werent taking on programmers last year but this year might be different.

Unum is the name of the company so email here:
    UnumIrelandCareers[at]unum[dot]com (Take that spambots!)

I did my placement in Wyeth in Grange Castle (near Clondalkin). Was a great job to have, as you get some decent experience in day to day computer work. It is fairly basic stuff though. You wont be working on servers, or doing any programming, but the you will either be on the phones (1st level support) or desktop (2nd level). They have also taken loads of Carlow students over the years.

Also, i got a job out of it after college, which was dead handy.

I trained Kiith to become what he is today, so yes there is a fine history of Carlow IT students going to Wyeth. There will be several placements available via the college, a handful of them are worthwhile. So a good idea is to try source a placement yourself.

hey, thanks for the advice. i am going to try a few companies myself first the college haven't really given us any companys that may suit yet. have to get the CV's done up first.

theres only 12 of us in fourth year so hopefully we'll all get somewhere worthwhile.

what is Wyeth in Newbridge like?

    Hey Sandra,

Just thought i'd let you know that there's 35 students in CSM3 who will also be looking for placements this year.

By the way, how come there are only 12 in your class. Please tell me its not from a high fail rate...

    Hi
well i dont' know really why theres only twelve of us. There was 28 in our class last year - some failed, some got work, some hated third year so much that they just didn't come back.

i think the third year this year is much better with the work placement module. the project alternative is just a plain nightmare - was for me anyway.

so where are ye all planning on applying to?

I was going to give wexford hospital a go but the HSE are seemingly planning 1000 redundancies so that will probably be a non starter, will probably try the county and town councils, local IT companies etc...

You trained me how to find all the secret break rooms...thats it!

Also, i think they may have put an end to the tradition of hiring carlow students....

i'd be stunned if they hired any one from carlow this year with all the people there trying to get rid of. That and yea think they would have learned there lesson after having eoizy there!

Well the Newbridge and Grange Castle site are independant. The reason for the layoffs in Newbridge is product related and not entirely recession related.

From an employer point of view, you get a cheap employee for 6 months so it is more than possible they will take on people. Even so it will be tough finding placements for everyone this year.

Why do i keep gettin mentioned? Particular people in there were highly focused on giving a good impression, and I was friendly to everyone person in there! Perfect gentleman!!

    Clearly the perfect employee!

clearly! but obviously due to unforseen circumstances in the market, and fiscal instability, some cuts had to be made. if u had a choice, who would ya nominate to go; someone who is crap, but ya like, or someone really good, but who ya bully every day and cant stand? obvious answer there. tho ya cant cut them for that reason, ya have to have a watertight reason like "7 minutes".

God why wasnt there a work placement module when I did CSM3, I failed my project first time around and had to go back and resit it during the summer, that was one of the main reasons why I didnt go on and do 4th year, I had enough of college after the fecking projects

Were you one of the people in the first CSM class that had everyone go back during the summer? ya woulda started in 2001.

How are the placements going this year considering the current economic climate? Willl all students be placed?

And so what happens if not placed on your work experience?! Can you go on the dole or could you skip straight into 4th year as you have a year of nothing ahead!!?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 226 ✭✭johnnybmac

The work placement is supposed to start in march (just after final exams) and end in september, then back in to 4th year. If we dont find placement, we do an intensive project from march to may. The entire project must be done under supervision, in the college...

As JBMC pointed out you will have to do a project. A further worry would be the following year. Back when there was a placement to be had, your final year project was based around the work placement. You picked a project and applied it to the company you worked for.

If the class is struggling for placements then Im not sure what your final year project will be based on.

It sounds a bit drastic but has anyone considered offering their time free of charge? Many work placements are unpaid in other colleges so it might be worth considering.

Not in our course :( Unfortunately for the poor guys who didn't get placed in our course, they have to get it after 4th year when they have their jobs. they can't get their degree until they've served their time
