Looking for some advice please! Any photos i store on the mac are put into a file called "iPhoto Library". However whenever i connect my iphone or want to upload a photo somewhere, i have to open iphone and copy the photo to another folder or my desktop to do it.

I dont fancy keep duplicates of my photos just to sync with my iphone. Is there any way around this?

Eh? You should be able to sync your iPhone directly with iPhoto.

Or Control-Click a photo and select "Show File" to be brought to the original photo inside the iPhoto Library in Finder. Or Control-Click on the library itself and select "Show Package Contents" to be able to browse the library in Finder.

Strange as it sounds but it never syncs with the right folder!
