I was under the impression that Barristers were not allowed to advertise or tout for business, but today I saw a google ad for a barrister on this site.

I have attached a picture of the ad. Can anyone clarify this for me?

    Thanks,
    Randomer

The code of practice says this:
6.1 Barristers may advertise by placing prescribed information concerning themselves on the website of the Bar Council and subject to such rules and regulations as may be promulgated from time to time by the Bar Council in respect of the content of such an entry. Barristers may advertise by such other means as the Bar Council may prescribe by way of regulations promulgated from time to time, which regulations shall be promulgated for the purposes of protecting the public interest, facilitating competition and maintaining proper professional standards.

I think the ad you saw was advertising mediation services. Anybody can be a mediator so advertising mediation services is allowed for barristers just like it is for anyone else. If the ad said "Barrister of 30 years experience will win your personal injury case" then there would be a problem.

There was a reform recently on this allowing websites. Not 100% where its documented though.

AFAIK it's not online. The Bar Council works mainly on paper. Some of the websites are poor.
