I hate to be pedantic but Blurays have nothing to do with DVD's. They are completely different. But thanks for the link.

Yeah sorry. I'm tired and BluRays didn't sound right for some reason.

No you don't, you love it. Admit it!

As far as I can see there's only one movie there for $8.99, Short Circuit. Call me a cynic but I think a lot of the studios/distributors are just burning the old DVDs onto BluRay media now, hoping to make a premium. Certainly the Terminator 2 Bluray bargain that was posted here a few months back was shocking. At best it might have been as good as the DVD.

These are Region 1 unfortunately. Is there such a thing as a multi-region blu-ray player at the moment?

Nope, not at the moment. It is possible to mod them though.

Region 1 doesn't exist for Bluray. Amazon being lazy I guess as it should be Region A. Lots of bluray movies are region free though so it is worth checking it out on a site like Movietyme or http://bluray.liesinc.net/ before buying online from across the Atlantic.

I bought Full Metal Jacket from Amazon.com a few months back and even though their website stated that it was Region 1 (which was incorrect as blu rays go by letters, e.g. region A, region B etc), it worked on my ps3.

I'm tempted to buy Transformers on blu ray but the dvd version that I own looks brill so I don't know if it would be worth the premium to get the blu ray. Any comments?

The majority fo BluRay movies will play on your PS3 no problem, is the standalone players that you'll have problems with.

In regards to the movies themselves, I've gotten a few movies out on BluRay and I was like meh, just a DVD with groovey menus/extras, then I got Rambo out, sweet jebus, it was amazing, the quality, the colours, the sound, the everything, it was just amazing. It appears that most older movies are being "upscaled" to BluRay, while not just copying the film onto a new media, it's just that they original was not recorded on good enough stock for BluRay, just wait until The Dark Knight comes out, that will knock our socks off.

Short story long, don't bother with older movies, DVD will be just as good, but as newer movies come out, just get them in BluRay

would have to agree, didnt think there was much diff until i watched casino royale and batman begins

It all depends on the quality of the transfer as, like others have mentioned, sometimes they just port over a really bad transfer and put it on Blu-ray disc and everybody expects it to be amazing; same thing happened with HD-DVD.

In saying that though, the majority of Blu-ray movies look far better than their DVD counterparts and the animated movies, such as Cars, Ratatouille, etc look unbelievable. Some other great video transfers on Blu-ray are I, Robot, Batman Begins, as mentioned in the post above, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Speed Racer and many more.

There is a great site that has reviews of both HD-DVD and Blu-ray movies called High-Def Digest.

For importing discs this isn't the case, it just depends on whether the BD itself is region free or not e.g. The US release of Iron Man is region free, but The Eye isn't.

Again, not entirely true. For example, the new BD release of the Godfather trilogy is immeasurably better than the existing dvd release. I would also imagine the forthcoming release of Casablanca on BD would be an improvement over the dvd.

The waiting is killing me! The prologue on the Batman begins Bluray is stunning. I haven't seen the whole movie yet and I'm resisting downloading it so I'll be a Dark Knight virgin when it is released on Bluray. Fingers and toes crossed for a pre Xmas release.

Now could this thread have wandered any further off topic?

    I don't want to start a fight but doesn't DVD=Digital Versatile Discs
BluRay movies are digital, versatile and discs.

I read that The Dark Night will be coming out in December but I'm not sure if that is acurrate. Iron Man and Hancock and Wall-E are a few other good Blu Rays out soon.

You could also say that Blu-ray could be called Blu-ray Laser Disc as it is a a disc that needs a laser to play. Either way, the official name is Blu-ray disc but most people shorten it to just Blu-ray.

Wall-E, Hancock and The Dark Knight are three movies I am definitely looking forward to on Blu-ray, I just hope that Blu-rays in general come down in price a bit more by Christmas.

I disagree. I do not see how a movie made on 35mm film 20 years ago converted to HD should be inferior unless it was low budget; or the conversion was done badly.

Agree with boopolo here. There should be a marked improvement on BD/HD over DVD...unless of course the transfer was done poorly.

Blade Runner is regarded as one of the best quality HD movies you can buy, and that's ancient.

Alliance Electrical in Georges Street, Dublin have a Panasonic multi region player for sale. See their web site for details or try Richer Sounds.

Strongly agree with both of you here. There is practically no difference between "film" now and 30+ years ago. The problems comes in the transfer process. You'll find that some of the cheap blu-rays are in fact just copied straight from dvds and not the original film stock. The reason is it is quite expensive and tricky to get something copied straight from the original stock so they won't spend the money unless they consider it worth while never mind the fact that the process can actually damage the film.

Let's not forget here that 35mm film is still much higher def than 1080p and the only and i can't stress enough the "ONLY" reason studios are moving over to digital recording cameras is because there is so much CGI in movies nowadays they end up scanning all the film over to digital anyway so it's just cheaper and easier to record digital in the first place.
