Just wondering how many of you have a tv licence ? Do you think its worth it ? (aside from the penalties for being caught without one)

Did a quick search and couldn't find the same topic so sorry if its been brought up before. Apologies if it a nono as a question.

I have only Rte 1,2, tv3 and tg4 but of course I have one :p

And no, I don't think its worth it.

Ok. What do you really get for your hard earned bobs ? Legalities aside, anything you might want to watch is probably freely available on the internet.

Granted you may not want to watch TV on your computer but I can't see any big incentive to pay RTE the sum they are looking for. Especially in light of the fact that they show decent serials, 24, medium so on and so on at ridiculous hours of the early morning.

The 4 hours a night on rte 2 of "extreme animals ,weather etc, etc" is an example of shoddy scheduling. Nearly as bad as TV3 for "my brother gave birth to my lizard pets son" ****.

I lied earlier. I have never had a tv licence. I watch what I want on the web.

I have one, but I think it's a rip off. I understand the reasoning behind it, but I don't watch much on RTE, and those shows I do are generally not "home produced". If even once a year RTE produced a show of some description that I might actually enjoy I might reconsider its value for money. It doesn't even have to be a particularly big budget show, I'd settle for a decent sitcom.

I understand the reasoning as well but **** it. The home produced shows are an embarassment. I watched Class Act last Sunday. The wannabe x-factor was a showcase in how not to do it. Right down to the "suspenseful" pauses before someone knew they got through or not. To go on...Raw, Fair City, Winning Streak, Late Late show, Tubridy ****in' Tonight...I could go on.

And I'm supposed to pay for this.

    I think not.

    +1

rte totalls about 1% of what i watch on television. i dont think i should have to fund it if i dont watch it. and i especially dont think a person should pay for it if they have sky. thats like being taxed twice.

I hardly listen to the radio at all, and when I do it's certainly not RTE. This means that I'm paying for Pat Kenny, Gerry Ryan et al to bore the nation rigid every day and I'm getting even less return on my contribution there than I am from the tv stations.

Ok I watch the news a bit and maybe a CSI or 2 but not enough to justify the asking price. Why do you think it's so worth it Mossy ? Genuinely. If you think you are getting value for money fair enough.

RTE get in episodes of The Simpsons before Channel 4, that's what I like about them.

SkyOne gets them in much much earlier, though I don't know why you'd be interested in them.

Nobody does Irish news as good as RTÉ. Sport coverage is fantastic. They do bring in imports that are shown before pay tv in the UK therefore giving viewers without multichannel television the chance to see some programmes. They tend not to butcher movies like their counterparts in the UK. Current affairs programming is decent. Radio One is handy when driving and I want some news.

Would you like to know anything else?

Can't believe someone's first reason for thinking the license was poor value for money was that they show medium on late night? Far too many people expect personalised TV schedules.

RTE do some stuff well. There's other stuff they don't do well. They've to cater for most tastes and do a reasonable job with a very limited budget. RTE's main problem is their proximity to the BBC (which is a world leader in most broadcasting areas) but its an unfair comparison
