Apple Remote & Powerpoint

I'm looking for some wisdom on using an Apple Remote to control Powerpoint 2008 on a MBP running Leopard.

All I want to do is step through a presentation, slide by slide ... nothin' fancy.

Has anyone done it ... is it even possible ?

I don't have an Apple Remote yet ... is it crazy to think there is a way to control the slideshow using another device, like a learning / generic brand remote ?

Take a look at an app called Remote Buddy, it lets you use pretty much any remote (including an iPhone or iPod touch) to control nearly every function on your Mac and costs €20.

    Thanks for that ... there's a 30 day trial ... I'll check it out.

    :)

    Just installed that now.

Works like a charm for Powerpoint ... controlling it from my iPhone.

The MBP acts as a webserver to the iPhone over an adhoc/point to point connection ... so you don't even have to be attached to a wireless LAN.

    Thanks for the suggestion. :)

I have always just used the remote that came with the MBP. You just press forward or backward, really simple. No need to any additional software.

He doesn't have one though ;) They don't come with them any more.

Remote Buddy also adds a huge range of functionality beyond flicking through presentations, but if that's all you want to do and you have an Apple remote there's not much point to it.

I don't have an Apple Remote ... but I do have an iPhone ... which gives me more functionality (if I ever need /want it) using Remote buddy.

I had hoped there would be a freeware / opensource solution ... but it's hard to argue with the price.

The powerpoint 'behaviour' is pretty good, and there seems to be other profiles for things like iTunes, Front Row ... and all the stuff you'd expect.

    I sound like a shill ... sorry :o

Oh, right! Didn't know that. I was a bit upset when I saw new MBPs had come out since mine had only been purchased a little time before. Knowing that at least mine still came with the remote cheers me up a bit. So what if the new ones are better! Bah!

    *snuggles remote* There!

Why *did* they discontinue the remote being bundled with the MBP? Seems thick to me.

Because now they can charge you for it.

I tried that a while ago and it was very, very basic, with possibly the worst UI I've ever seen. Maybe it's come on since then but the site doesn't suggest it. Remote Buddy, for the sake of €20, is a far more polished application. But again, I guess it depends what you want it for.
