Greetings to all participants of Boards.ie Photography Book 2008 project. The time and tide wait for no men, so let's keep moving!
As far as I understood, there was mutual agreement on size: 8 x 10 inches.

    So, Landscape or Portrait?

*edit* So, as far as the book itself, i think landscape would be nice.... All depends on the actually images submitted.

I don't really mind but I went for landscape. :)

    Landscape
i generally prefer landscape books but the photo i want to use are portrait. there was a suggestion of say if the book was landscape people who want to use a portrait photo would be able to submit 2 images, would this still be going ahead?

I have never heard about more pictures by one person. If the books is in another orientation than my picture, I would have absolutely no problem with that. Who would like to see my picture shouldn't be laze to turn the book 90 degrees, especially if there is another picture in the same orientation facing mine.

    Landscape
it was mentioned in this thread anyway.
I was just wondering what was going on with that idea.
    anyway my votes for portrait.

Is it possible to see what the submissions are first, then decide? As in, if the majority are in portrait, then go for portrait, or vice versa.

Also, if the orientation doesn't suit the picture submitted, will the images be rotated to ensure they are full page size? Personally I don't think that generally looks good. Most people won't turn the book, they'll tilt their head a bit, glance at the picture and move on before they get neck strain.

    Just a thought...

I'm not part of this project so please ignore if you think this unwarranted, unhelpful or if it has already been considered. I've just submitted my own book for printing with Blurb today (I think that's who you are using) and hope to receive in mid October. I settled for landscape format mainly because that suited my style.

But there are a couple of practical points if you plan to use the pre-canned template pages. If the book is in portrait format, then the largest landscape format photo you can have is 7.9 x 4.8 inches - and one edge will be in the gutter, ie it will extend into the binding in the middle of the page.

If the book is landscape format, then the largest portrait format picture will be 5.8 x 8.2 inches - and this will entail the photo "bleeding", i.e. printing to the edge of the page on three sides - top, bottom and the side page edge - but leaving a white margin to the centre binding. Arguably better value.

I did feel that there weren't that many good options for portrait photos in the landscape format - most of the other templates have one side of the photo into the centre binding - which personally I don't like for "arty" photos.

If you plan to use say Photoshop to layout a page, then obviously you can use the full page template and set up the photograph whatever way you want. You can even do this within the Blurb Booksmart tool - but there is very little control - no rulers or measurements.

    Sorry its so long winded.

How many more threads are we going to have about the book? In all fairness, the thing is all over the shop! Would it not be possible to keep everything together? I haven't a clue what's going on, because I can only dip in & out the odd time during the day.

I have to agree with city exile..

No disrespect to the organisers ! but I am also at a loss as to what is going on...

Any chance of a thread or notice as to what is the up to date situation regarding all matters ? doesnt have to be definative notice, just an indication what is happening..

and I take my hat off to the organisers !! Well done !

    * Landscape for me also !

City-Exile: If there was one thread only with information about the book and with links to other threads in which all the topics would be discussed, that thread would become discussion as well and all information would be lost.
The amount of threads is only to have it as much democratic as possible - we have to create ONE book for approx. 120 people. There are two ways of doing it. Democratic one - longer, but to insure satisfaction of majority people. ThOndacratic one - faster, but with many disappointed people who would like to express their opinion, ideas and ask relevant questions.

Well from my perspective and a mods perspective I prefer the individual threads breaking down the process. We have requested a sub forum for projects but until that comes to fruitition these posts stay here.

    Landscape as well btw :)

Don't really mind which, so I'll go with the majority and pick landscape.

Landscape for me. The photo of mine everybody picks as favourite is landscape.

I vote we should try a bit of ThOndacracy - might be fun ;)

I voted for landscape but I don't see any problem with scaling down the size to fit into portrait or viceversa.

On a related note to the opinions regarding the organisation could I suggest openinng a sticky or something where only final decisions to-date are posted? We could also have a list of pending decisions/processes so readers can go to the particular thread and read/contribute.

I don't check the threads every day and when I do it takes for ever to figure out what's changed since my last log in.

Also, as a final comment: democracy only works up to a point and after that somebody (project manager or organiser) has to make a call that everybody has to accept. I think we've reached that point in a couple of issues.

If I can help in anyway just pm me.

So landscape is almost certainly the winner.
    Thank you for all suggestions.

There'll be an e-mail address of this project to create a mailing list for regular updates on news here.

Thonda, can i suggest if someone can maintain a mini site or even blog to highlight all the progress and news in one place? that'd be more organised. we could just use the like of blogspot or something, each stories and updates can be tagged differently.

    edit: i just created a sample site - http://boardsyearbook.blogspot.com
