Highlands crofters blame sea eagles for leap in lamb deaths

Crofters in the Scottish Highlands fear their livelihoods are being threatened by sea eagles, which they claim have killed more than 200 lambs.

Fifteen of the birds were released into the wild at a secret location in Scotland in August. Since then, sheep farmers from Gairloch, in the north-west Highlands, claim the predators have been responsible for a rise in attacks on their flocks.

One woman reported seeing one of the sea eagles swooping down on a lamb and lifting it from the field in its talons.

If I remember rightly, Border county farmers on our own island sustained dramatic livestock casualties during the NI troubles due to the activities of Helicopters. One vet was known to have examined animals and produced death certs whilst on the golf course in North Carolina. Not suggesting that Scots farmers would go this far for a claim. However 200 lambs seems an unlikely tally from such a small number of eagles. There is a possibility that Golden and Sea eagles will take a lamb, however there is usually an ammount of carrion in sheep rearing areas and carcases found around eyries do not necessarily mean that eagles have taken live animals.

Yeah, that can't be right, 200 lambs killed by 15 birds since August?

Compensation:rolleyes::rolleyes: Funny it always seems to happen after sea eagles are released, then once money is offered for animals that can be proven to have been predated by eagles, suddenly its found that they seem to have gone off killing lambs.:rolleyes: We have the same sh*t in Kerry.

There was a short programming on this on breakfast tv this morning.
The eagles must be pretty fat on Mull if they are taking 200 lambs in a few months.
The sea eagle likes rabbit, fish, carrion and more rabbit, with a little bit of lamb for a change of diet.
Mostly dead lamb but heck you can't claim for a dead lamb from natural causes.
The farmer likes to blame anybody and anything to get a few extra pounds of the government.
So, who is the baddie, the sea eagle or the farmer, I leave that to you to answer......... sea_eaglesea_eagle
