Hi. I believe when applying for rent allowance you are asked somewhere along the line as to why you are applying for the rent allowance. I am 29 and strictly speaking I could remain at home but don't feel "want to gain more independence" is a valid reason! Does anyone know the government stance on this are we all expected to live at home till we can afford rent or mortgages

    Rent allowance is means tested.

For example Ms X is a single parent. She applys for a grant for rent allowance. The max they will give i think is 1100.
Her rent is 1100 the DSW pay a certain amount depending on incomes.

So after the means test lets say she gets €750. Because her income is so low.

If you are full time it would be very small.

If you are full time the best thing to do would be start saving. I know easier said then done. Kinda in the same boat. I want to get my own place. At the end of the day rent is dead money. Your paying someone elses mortgage.

You will not get rent allowance if you are in full time employment. You shouldn't be looking for it just because you don't want to live at home anymore.

Why should you be looking for it? Can you apply for it before you actually move into a place, so that it's there when you do?

    Hi,

Can someone please tell me how to go about applying for rent allowance. My 21 year old son has just moved into an apartment. He is only working (contracted) 16 hours a week.

    Thanks in advance.

Maebee, your son needs to go to his local CWO.
He needs to be renting the place for 6 months OR be on the local council housing list before he will get rent allowance.

VB7000, you cannot apply for Rent Allowance before you move into a place and have it ready for when you move in. You must be renting the place you are looking for R/A for, for 6 months before you will awarded R/A OR having your housing needs assesed by the local council and get on the housing list before getting R/A.

I am on the housing list and I am waiting the last month for my application to even be looked at. As far as I am aware it will take another 3 wks at least.

Agree with above poster in that you will not get Rent Allowance if you are in full time employment.
