That info may be out of date, my last pay (corporal) was €574.94 and there's no reason I'd be on point 2 of the pay scale.

Wow that is much at all, well people certainly arent going into the pdf for the pay.

How easy is it to go up in ranks?

    Just a quick question (kinda) related to this;

After becoming a 3 star how long does it usually take to become a Corporal? Can you go in for a Corporal course straight after your 3 star one, or do you have to 'do your time' for a few years as a 3 star?

    Any info appreciated.

    Thanks.

I know of one person that was detailed to a PNCO Course fairly soon after he came out of training. He had gotten Overseas right after training though, so had experience under his belt.

99% of the time though, you'll have to do some time in your Unit and some soldiering before going for your Stripes.

Depends on the Units needs and whether you're a bag of ****e or not.

    Am I going mad????

I presume the officer pay is annual and I hope the ranks pay is weekly????

Is there a reason for difference in the way they are presented?

Yeah, was thinking that- makes sense you have to get a bit practical experience I suppose.......

    Cheers.

Sorry for kinda hijacking this thread but I'm always one for the questions. ;)

I'm just wondering how 3 stars find the pay? I don't want this to get into one of those "Oh, we don't get enough!" type of threads but do you feel you have enough to cover living expenses? Rent? Bills? etc. (Especially those of you living in Dublin)

I know nobody joins the army cause of the pay but I've just sent off my forms yesterday and wondering IF I get in will I be able to rent an apartment, pay the bills, save a bit of money?

I've heard that there is also pay for other duties/subsistence/overseas etc.? Does this tend to contribute quite a lot to the average 3 stars pay?

    Once again, any info. appreciated.

    Thanks.

As a 3 Star you'll be doing your fair bit of duties, so duty money is quite a frequent addition to your pay.

Personally, I find the money decent enough to live on and so does most of the lads I work with. The trick is to not spend it like it's going out of fashion, the lads you'll hear cribbing about the pay are the ones that spend it on silly things.

    Cheers for that.

Yeah. IF I get in all I want is enough to rent a small apartment of my own to be honest. Couldn't be in the army and still be living with Ma and Da I don't think!

    Thanks for that Poccington.

Also, I'm speaking as an Infantry Private.

Depending on your Corps you may be eligible for Tech Pay which in turn adds a few quid onto to the wages.

    Bit off-topic again, but...

Do you still live in barracks during your 3 star training?

Sure if you do youd be able to save a bundle over the course of the 7 months (2 star+ 3star), wouldn't ya?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,632 ✭✭✭NoQuarter

well i left the army because the pay wasnt good enough, its enough to survive on but if your looking for a comfortable life then forget about it!

overseas pay is great but obviously the catch is you gotta sit overseas for 6 LONG months to get it! duty pay is hardly worth mentioning...an extra 45 euro for a 24 hour shift!! no thanks!

in my old unit it would take about 3 years to get onto an NCO course then the course itself is 6 months

yeah ya do but you only get around 120 per week for the first few weeks (not that ya need money) so dont expect to have a bundle after training at all couse you wont unles your a miser!

pay has greatly increased since you were in king-stew but a rec/2* takes home about 370-400/wk, pocc might have more accurate figures.

Depending on how far away from home you are and where the barracks themselves are situated, you can be let off for the weekend.

This is up to the corporals training you though, it all depends on what mood there in really lol.
