Conundrum .. 50D or 5D(II)

I'm sure im not alone here but ...

    I have a 400D at the moment with :
    24-70 f2.8L,
    70-200 f2.8L IS
    EF 70-300 f5.6 IS USM ,
    EF 50mm f1.8 MKII ,
    Tamron 17-50 f2.8 DII ..

I have been meaning to upgrade and was gonna get the 40D ..
then I decided to wait for the 50D and was gonna get that...
but now with the 5d been released and it looks like it will be at a good price
(E1,900) on competitive sites... and people who i know that own a 5D tell me of the much higher IQ of the 5D series then 30D , 40D etc...

Im not sure which one to go for....

    Pros for 50D
Speed 6.3 fps .. I like this for sports
Longer length (not FF) I like this for sports/wildlife
    high ISO range ..

    Cons 50D
Price is high for not much of an upgrade ..
high MP might make images noisier ..
IQ not as good as 5 series ..

    Pros 5D (II)
Price is good for a new PRO model
    Superb IQ
    even higher ISO then 50d..
    HD Video ..
wider at the 24 end for 24-70 lens..

    Cons 5D II
Slow 3.9 fps .. won't be good for sports
Lose length on Telephoto lenses (not good for sports/wildlife)
My Tamron won't work on it .. and I quite like that lens ...

MAybe if the 50D review states that IQ is almost as good as 5D (II) ..
that would be enough for me to be satisfied with it without regretting
buying it .. cos that would be the worst thing .. to have a regret ...

Same here, caught in 2 minds....
Reading up on the Video capabilities of the 5D mk II and they appear superb.

    Very lengthy read.

I'd have to save hard for the 5D mk II but it will be harder knowing that the 50D's out.....I'm not a patient person when it comes to goodies. :)

I wouldnt knock the new 5d off for sports just yet, I used one for the Longine Grand prix in the RDS this year and the shots from it were out of this world in terms of quality, it just required a bit of timing from my part :) ..

Yeah I tend to go for the timing angle too as everytime I tried burst a fair while back they were always blurry...tips or reason why?

Possibly not tracking the action during the burst, with Al Servo changing focus as players move through the frame.

Exactly .. the way i see it is that €900 or so on the 50D would be a "waste" (as i may regret it .. not saying it's a bad camera!) but the extra €1,000 would be a great investment....

Possibly but it depends on what you use the camera for, I do see your point regarding the reasoning behind the €1000 extra being an investment and you would not be dissappointed with even the current 5d over the 50d.

i'm sort of confused as to why Canon rolled out these two cameras so close to one another and the ones they replace. Is the 50 D a red herring ?
are they hoping that people will reach a little further (into their wallets) and go for the 5 D mk II instead1.
I would imagine there could be a few second hand 5D's knocking around soon enough! :)

Its a lot of dosh for the new 5d, I cant see any conflict with either release they are aimed at different markets. I would be plenty pi**ed off if I had bought a 1dsmk3 though..

well it's sure got the two lads there in a dither!!! :)

if you compare them side by side apart from some of the obvious differences the FF and Movie mode they're more alike than dis-similar.

I realise they're suppossed to be aimed at different markets. My point was tho! will the roll out tempt people to leapfrog the usual upgrade path and go from a 30/40 D straight to a FF 5D.

I bought a 1 D mks III, but appearence of the 5 D mk II isn't annoying me. I've had the 1DS mk III and the 1 D III for some time now and they're earning their keep. I was going to get a 5 D at one stage but decided on another pro body to replace the 1Ds MkII i had. I suppose if i had bought it last month and then this came out i'd be sorry i didn't wait. But when i bought the 1DS III there wasn't anything else on the market near it, but thats the way things are eh? cant wait forever either :)
another year and a bit people will be again agonising over whether to upgrade or sit and wait or whatever.
    the joys of photography :)

Absolutely Fionn, I checked out the "high iso" samples from the new 5d and they dont look anything great, 1dmk3 still has it beat as far as I am concerned.

I'm in the same situation upgrading from a 350d.

Either the 5D mark II with the 24-105 L

    or

    the 50D with 24-105 L and 10-22.

I think it'll come down to IQ and price difference, as the 50d will require an extra €500 lens it might not cost much extra for the 5d.

I think the 5d MK II will be around €1,600 on Kea!!!

Just a small comparision, I used the current 5d at the RDS this year and here is a shot from the jumping. I used aiservo for this and centre point only, lens was a Sigma 120-300 f2.8. Shot in jpg with standard settings. The detail picked up by the 5d is fantastic and this is a 3 year old camera, can you imagine what the new one will be like :)
