    Thinking very strongly about buying the d700, would like to get some feed back from any users on here, in particular anyone who made the jump from the d300!

    out of interest what is the D300, and D700 roughly equivalent to with Canon cameras ?

    D300 = 40D ??

    d700 = 50D ?? (FF version) ...

    Jackdaw I have no idea what the comparisons are between the Nikon and Canon,

    The three top Nikon Cameras would be the D3 the D700 and then D300.

    D3 and D700 are full frame.

    I thought the top Nikon was the D1X ? or D2X ?

    That would make the D700 a 5D in Canon terms I would suspect.

    OK .. so 50D/40D would be around the D300 mark ?

    D300/D90 = 50D
    D700 = 5D MkII
    D3 = 1D MkIII
    (roughly)

    edit: wait is the newest 1D the MkIII version? In which case the D3 is comparable to that but better, lower than 1Ds MkIII though

    So they don't even have anything that compares to the 1DsMIII. :)

    Sorry, I'm not very knowledgeable about the higher end Canon cameras so I didn't know they had their MkIII version out already. the 1D MkIII isn't full frame is it? The D3 is a 11fps full frame 12.3 mp camera - better than the 1Ds on some points and falls down on others - different tools for different jobs.

    The big two camera manufacturers tend to piggyback each other in terms of features/pricing so no direct competition takes place:

    Going down the list the ordering tends to be:

    N D60
    C 450D
    N D90
    C 50D (debatable at this point which is better - D90 or 50D)
    N D300
    C 5D
    N D700
    C 1D Mk III
    N D3
    C 1Ds MkIII (debate here over which camera occupies top spot - depending on the needs of the photographer - speed and low ISO performance = D3, absolute resolution = 1Ds MkIII)
    N ? (D3x?)

    and of course there are the others e.g. Sony's A900 which on paper beats the 1Ds MkIII I think.

    The new Olympus micro 4/3rds compact (and I mean compact!) camera looks really intriguing too:

    edit: sorry that image was way too large - I've just left it as a link.

    I think the 1D M3 has a strange crop factor 1.3x

    And back on topic.

    Someone I know has a D700. All I know about it is that he likes it very much.

    I have seen some nice shots from the D700, only thing I would say is the price of the pro quality full frame lenses from Nikon are very expensive whereas the DX stuff is more affordable, Canon full frame lenses would be on the more affordable range (most of them)

    i've just come from my D1x up to the D300,different camera than the D700 but you'll probably find this is the same for both,feels very front heavy without a battery grip using bigger lenses
    any bad photo from the D300 has been my fault,not the cameras!
