    Hi all!

I came across a docu on one of the sky channels the other day as i was flicking. It was about doomsday and how the world will end and all that sort of stuff but in the 10 or so mins i saw of it there was a mention on the earth shifting axis! Now i dont know if iam in the right forum but is this possible? And if so what effect would it have on the planet?

    Thanks

Are you sure it didn't mean the magnetic field shifting axis, IE magnetic north switching to south and vice versa. That will happen sometime in the future and according to predictions it won't be good for us homo sapiens. The magnetic field would dip for a a while, resulting in a flood of harmful radiation from the sun pummelling the earth and givins us all cancer. Won't happen in our lifetime though.

Come to think of it i think it was a "polar shift"? Does that make any sense? Sorry about the vagueness!

It does wobble a fractional amount as it spins about its axis due to the gravitation forces of the sun and the moon, as best I can recall that it has something to do with to the fact that the earth has a slight bulge at the equator.

    EDIT found it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chandler_wobble

Can't think of any good scenario as to why it would be included in a doomsday program so a it probably was a pole shift that they were on about.

Thats great guys thanks! But what would the effect be on the earth if there was a pole shift?

Someones been reading crank material it sounds like. The magnetic poles are currently slowly switching as they naturally do every 10,000 years or so. Don't confuse this with the rotational axis poles.

Ok so there is a natural shift every 10,000 years of the magnetic poles, is that gonna have an effect on us or will we even notice it? And do the rotational axis poles ever change?

For a start compasses will indicate north in the wrong direction!

Humans are around longer than 10,000 years so im sure we will be fine!

The magnetic pole shift is readily noticeable. The rotational poles may vary slightly due to natural precession.

    The earth's polar axis wobbles like a child's spinning-top every 26,000 years.
So the pole star we have now is just temporary.

When the Pyramids were being built "Thuban" was the Pole Star.

If you hang around for 13,000 years bright Vega will be the Pole Star then.

    Explained here:
