lots of people do swim right through the winter. More in the sea than lakes though and the times decrease significantly. For example a channel swimmer I know will only go in for 30 minutes when the water temperature is in the 7-8 C range. Hypothermia is a real potential problem and you might not recognise the symptoms in yourself until it is too late. It is always advisable to swim in groups but particularly as the temperatures drop.
