    His is a name I had sort of forgotten about, he used to have regular columns then disapeared (I have hardly bought a paper in the last 18 months so missed his reappearence).

    Back in the 80s he and his wife sort of represented the potential "new Ireland" - well educated, urbane, wealthy and liberal. I mention that cos the Ireland they grew up in was none of those things.

    Paul was great at the macro stuff, his return to the Irish Times improved their editorialising massively. He's a big loss to the media
