Unemployed...

    Well, where do I start...

September '07 I left a secure, yet undesirable, job in a bank. I wanted to finish my last year of college, and I did. I will graduate in a few weeks with an honors degree in international business. I should be happy and excited, but I am far from that. Since last March I have been searching for a job but to no avail. I have had some interviews but never seem to nail them. I blame the recession to an extent and my own abilities too. I have joined fas, the local job club, I send CV's to every recruitment agency I know but I never hear anything from them. It's pretty depressing as I have pretty hefty loans to pay off for my time at college.

Is there anyone in, or was in, a similar situation? Is there light at the end of the tunnel? Can anyone offer any advice at all? Thanks in advance...

Yeah, I can sympathise with you there. I graduated nearly three years ago (Engineering) and after listening to the lecturers tell us we would all walk into jobs it turned out there was nothing there.

I applied to every place I could think of to get something just to get experience (the classic catch 22 - people want experienced people but how can you get experience if no one wants to take you on).

I had to keep on my part time job on full hours to keep some cash coming in.

Eventually got a job (at a lower grade than I wanted/could have gotten) and took it. Within a month I had offers from around three other places. I went for all the interviews and ended up in one of them and am still with them.

So yeah moral of the story, it sucks, it will depress you and you will feel demoralised but unfortunately its part of life, keep plugging away, send applications, join job related websites, upload CV's online etc.

Something will come along, it just takes time. A lot of people have an impression (myself included) that once your done with college a job will just land in your lap, if only this was the case !

Best of luck with your search.

Same story, lecturers will feed you a load of bull**** about getting jobs. Because that's part of their job too. I temped for a while. www.maryb.ie are great for getting temp work but I don't think there's much out there at the moment. Keep trying though.

Ah yes, maryB, I sent in an email to them about 2 years ago. Nothing though. I do find recruitment agencies to be completly useless. I know some of my friends swear by them, but my experience with these agencies is not very positive.

Does anyone know of any walk in agencies. I know in belgium they are lots of them on the high street of antwerp. You walk in, state what kind of work you are looking for and viola! you have work. So it may be, in most cases, temporary, but it's something right?

I'm in the same boat as you, pretty much - except I've been in it for a year.

I've worked during that time, but not in my field, and I don't expect to any time soon at this stage. Now that I've relocated I'm looking for work again and not too happy with the situation :P
