Hi there, quick question, what are the implications if someone fails pass maths in the junior cert. Can they still go on to do pass maths in the leaving or do they have to do foundation maths? Cheers

Depends on your schools policy, you could technically go on and do HL for the leaving cert.

If someone failed pass Maths in the JC and was trying their best, then their level of Maths is very weak. A person with such a low level of Maths will hold a pass LC class back, so the school might decide not to let them do pass. They could of course get 'grinds' to teach them the basics of Maths and catch up that way.

If they failed because they messed about and left out questions or didn't try in the JC that's a whole other problem.

Ya you can do honours if you want, the school will heavily "suggest" that you drop to foundation, but at the end of the day you can do what you like

Cheers for the replies, we were worried he would have to do foundation level which is worth f all for 3rd level courses.

I'm with Spurious here, there's a big difference between someone who fails pass maths due to lack of trying/missing lots of school and someone who put a lot into it and failed.

If you feel he could have worked a lot harder than passing LC OL maths with the help of a few grinds should be managable.

I would think that his school would want people to do the highest level that they can so might be more encouraging about him doing pass if they think he'll work at it.

Ordinary level leaving cert maths will be harder than junior cert, so if you worked hard and couldn't pass then you should do foundation. If you didn't work and you are prepared to work now then you might be able to do pass.
