Bronx Zoo C&C

Had a ball out in NY, got some great shots in bronx zoo. I rented out a 70-200 2.8 IS from adorama, only cost €25 :) The staff in the rental department are very helpful, he gave me a free strap for my 40D as well. I rarely use a strap, but thought it might be a good idea since I was carrying that lens around all day :)

The shop is quiet good, although no where near as extensive as B&H's (which left a gapping hole in my pocket). I brought my camera around with me everywhere in the lowepro slingshot which did hurt after a while, if you're going out there, i'd recommend something that is extremely comfortable if you're going to carry your equipment around for more than 8 hours a day for two weeks.

Anyway, here's some shots for C&C, more on my flickr

The last one is really good (reminds me of photos by another photographer). I like that it seems so staged because that's what these animal displays are. The one of the chimp with his arms occluding his face is a little unnerving, as if he/she is in despair, although losening up the composition might help a little, as in getting in a wee bit more background.

I REALLY like these! Makes me want 70-200 2.8 even more now, though.
The fourth is my favourite - very nice indeed. The light on one eye and the darkness in the other is lovely imho.

The third pic seems almost like he's watching a football match! :D

Great stuff. well done to you. The set demonstrates good image composition. Others mightn't agree with me but if i were to be critical, i'd question if the desaturation in the processing works or perhaps is done a little too much - for me (and accepting that i haven't seen the original out of camera images) the desaturation probably takes more from the end result than it adds (or again perhaps it is a little overdone). But overall - good stuff.

The monkeys were so animated. It seemed like some of the shots really captured personality in them. Agree with you on the tight crop, more of the background to the right might have made it better.

I loved using the 70-200 2.8, I would love to buy one but after B&H's I have macro and flash to play around with now.

One of my uncertanties was about the PP, I created one for the elephant and it drastically changed it, tried it on a few more and it gave a new feeling to them. I thought it added a lot more sadness and an old time feel to the shots, but I probably should have looked at them individually rather than as a set to try and bring out different seperate feelings from them. Good critique!

I really like no. 4, it's a tad underexposed though, would love to see a little bit more detail in the eyes.

I like the elephant shot and the last one but unfortunately I'm put of by the pp a little too extreme to my eye but that may not be as everyone else sees them. You did take lovely shots though. Its only the pp turning me off.

I like the last shot the most, REALLY like the way they've been processed!

Even outside of the actual shots the tone, colour etc are all great. A lovely feel to the photos or something i can't quite but my finger on!!!

    Well done.
