hi there i'm hoping there are djs in here to advise me. I've just startred up as a mobile dj in the south. I wouldn't have a clue as to what to charge.

    lets say
3 hrs at a wedding after band - how much?
3 hrs birthday party - how much?

4-5 hrs wedding instead of band - how much?

    after band _€350/€400
    parties??? €280-€300
Full night €650 (wedding price ) no band.

It all depends on your own costs. travel etc. but dont price your self too low as you will end up getting stuck doing "cheap gigs"

Ring a few dj s in your area, and ask them how much they charge, like your going to book them. Bit of market research like:)

    yeah...yeah you will

Assuming you have proper gear. i.e. enough to fill a big hall, a record collection with more cheese than the french and you're able to keep the crowd going.
    You also need backup.

btw, i've seen dj's charge even more than that.

as I SAID IF YOU START CHARGING CHEAP PRICES YOU WILL GET THE **** WORK,
price your self up there with the rest in your area maybe less a €10 and stick with it.
If your too cheap you will either 1. get all the crap gigs or 2. wont get booked at all because people, in paticular brides will think your just a bedroom dj chancing your luck.
Also dont forget about our friends from the revenue, they WILL want a bit of the action too.

    Where are you based?
If you need a bit of advise pm me, i have 12 djs working at least 3 nights a week, at the min mostly wedding work walking away with anything from €900- €1800 per week.(on a busy week of course).

Surely a guy starting out with no resume or references so to speak will find it difficult to get work if he charges the going rate (bar the odd gig.) I've been doing mobile work for about 4 yrs now and would still consider my prices more reasonable than the agencies etc. It's taken till now that I am getting gigs from word of mouth or people that saw me at other gigs. I would suggest to the Op to get some bar/club experience and learn the ropes that way as the jobs may be scarce in between.

It depends on where you are. You need to factor in travellng expenses, insurance (if you have it). If you have to rent some of the equipment, that would factor in as well. Don't undercharge for your time & effort. Compare with other dj's for hire in your area. Paying a good dj is worth the cost, particularly for a wedding. Good luck!
