    Hi
Am looking to connect my Macbook to my TV to view DVDs etc

I am looking at doing the following:

Buy Mini DVI to DVI cable
Buy DVI to HDMI Cable and connect to TV via HDMI

My question is will the sound work doing this via the tv and if anyone knows a better way, can they please advise me

    Thanks

Unfortunately, the sound will not work this way. HDMI will only carry sound from an HDMI output, which MacBooks do not have. As you're using DVI to HDMI, that can only do video, but it is still your best option for video really.

As for the audio, depends what you want to connect to. Most TVs have two co-axial inputs (typically colored red/white) for stereo sound input so you just need a mini-jack to twin co-axial cable to go from the headphone output of the MacBook to the inputs on the TV. However, you need to check if your TV will allow you to select the different audio input when using HDMI - there is a chance it might expect audio from the HDMI connection...

If you have a digital decoder/speaker setup, your best option will be to use an optical cable from the MacBook's headphone out again (it doubles as both stereo and optical/SPDIF out) to the decoder.
