Myself and my friend are new to lamping and i was wondering if a .22 subsonic round will kill the hairy fellow at 60 yards.

From the data on the CCI website a CCI subsonic HP round has the same energy at 50yds as a Stinger at 100yds so take the max distance you'd do with a HV round and half that is your max subsonic range. The fall off in energy isn't the same for both rounds, but as a rule of thumb it should allow you to estimate conservatively. If anyone has empirical evidence of course, I'd take their advice over mine. :-)

Data (distances in yds and energy in ft lbs):
    Distance|Stinger|Subsonic HP
    0|191|98
    50|119|82
    75|96|77
    100|81|72

I wouldn't fire a subsonic at a fox (unless he was in a snare). I did in the distant past but not anymore.:o
If you hit him you will most likely kill him eventually but the vast majority will run and you will never see them again unless you put it in his skull. You will wound a lot of foxes, if you want to shoot foxes you should get a .223, .222, .204 .22hornet or similar. The smallest round i would use on foxes would be .22magnum. The only thing i shoot with my .22lr is paper, i use my .22magnum on rabbits and .25-06 on foxes and deer.

I would have to agree with John, but would also add one mans range estimation and another's can vary quite a bit. I've seen guys walk out to the 50meter target board and think it was the 100 meter, if they do this on a range what are they like at night with the tunnel vision of a lamp in an open field?? It's best to have the extra power than to be found wanting. Just my opinion.

I'm not having a go at the OP, but its a waste of time. I was out friday night and seen 6 foxes and as soon as they "seen the light" they scarpered. I put a lot of this down to lads chancing their arms with .22lrs as if its a kind of a wonder weapon. Each fox I lamped was in excess of 150yds, and by God did they move.

Before anybody says why didn't I use a filter or how do I know they were shot at with a 22 I'll answer now:

    1. I have used filters here in my locality to no success.

    2. The majority of buckos use 22lrs down here and have no problem engaging targets past 100 yds, just trying their luck. I know because I've seen it done.

Go with what the other lads said use more firepower.

Always remember a missed fox is an educated fox.

I agree with all the above.

John Galway who used to post here is quite the fox shooter. He does a lot of it over the winter months.

Anyway, he shot a fox right in the skull from 80 yards and gave this fox to a student for medical research. Its brain was 80%+ destroyed I think.

So is the round capable of killing a fox. Yes but in the hands of an expert. Would I advise the calibre to anyone for lamping fox, HELL NO

OP get some more gun, the .22lr will frustrate you while lamping and probably cause more suffering than is necessary. You'll hit foxes, you'll know as you'll hear the round impact the body but they'll run away and you'll tear your hair out.

As fish slapped says range estimation and therefore accurate shot placement is tough. At night its tougher, with little experience of lamping and under the pressure to make/take the shot before foxy runs off, it gets closer to impossible.

It would want to be right between the eyes if you are using subs, personaly, I would use a high velocity bullet such as the stinger or lazer on a fox. That is with a .22lr. If you are aiming for the chest, forget it. I am speaking from experience and have no technical data to show you... sorry.

well would a HV round kill one at 50 yards.... because i was out the other night a i had a few young foxes come within 50 yards

Again a .22lr (sub and super sonic) will kill a fox.

Its all down to you T2, if you have the skills it will do it. Thousands of foxes have been shot with the .22lr.

Much easier job with a bigger rifle though. You miss slightly and it still drops dead on the spot. 2-3 inch miss with a .22lr and foxy runs away and you are left scratching your head wondering if you hit it.

I have a .22lr and a .223. Even though the .22lr is shorter, easier to handle, much quieter, cheaper ammo and I have a better scope for lamping on it. I still bring the .223 as there is more margin for error.

Would you not use a shotgun? If they're coming well in a shotgun with some big carts could do the J. O. B.
