Just jumping onto this thread for a bit of advice.

I've just moved into a new build and we have 4 zones (2 zones - 2 speakers, 2 zones - 1 speaker) with local volume control. All the speaker wires have been run back to the same point.

My question is, can I connect these wires into a normal left/right speaker output of a semi decent wattage hifi, or would I need some sort of huib before connecting in.

    Cheers in advance.

I am not quite clear as too how many speakers in total.
1 zone is normally 2 speakers. having said that you need to know what impedence they are 4 ohm / 8 ohm ?
Normally home audio amps are not stable below 4 ohm and will trip out.
the cheapest solution is a impedence matched speaker switching box.
they are are available in a few outlets but not all are impedence matched
this means that even if you have speakers that are different brands that are not all 8 ohm or 4 ohm the speaker switch unit will only give an 8 ohm signal to the amp thereby protecting it.
I saw 4 & 6 zone ones (with volume control for each zone) on www.acousticdimension.ie I can't remember the price around €160 or € 170 euro.
Otherwise you need a distribution amplifier with at least 4 zones and most are a lot more than the box.
