anyone got one of these?
if so tell all.

I've been thinking about one.

I recently got into the 7 string world, and after years of "7 strings? nah not for me" I finally tried one properly and wondered why I didn't have one already.

I spent most of my time detuning and setting up 6 strings for around the B area.. so I don't know why I was put off 7 strings, I just was. But now I don't know how I'd play a 6 string again.

I don't own one, but I had given great consideration to getting one before. I guess I've lost interest in the idea of 8 strings these days, but I'd still love to give one a go.

With regards to 7 strings, I think the whole nu-metal thing soured the instrument for a lot of people, and they weren't open to trying them out.

I think that was it alright. People automatically think korn, meshuggah, fear factory... but you can do so much more.

Check out Vai (the one on the left) with the 7 string.

I'm thinking that I'll get an 8 string when I get the money. Agile did a run of them that were affordable and they have good specs. I'm hoping to get one of them in the future.
I've been playing 7 strings for a bit now and I love them. For me anyway it took no time to get used to them and the amount of stuff that you can do with the extra string makes it really worth trying. I think an 8 string would be a bit more hassle to get used to but I think the extra bass notes would be deadly for clean stuff as well as knocking out some low tuned doomy type things with it.

Funnily enough, I would put a positive spin on that and say that it was precisely because of bands like Korn, Fear Factory etc. that people got into 7 string guitars :).

Personally I've never been much of a fan of Steve Vai so him playing 7 string guitars means little or nothing to me whereas I remember reading an interview with Dino Cazares when he still played with Fear Factory and he mentioned that he played 7 string guitars exclusively at that point. That intruiged me enough to give a 7 string a go and I have stuck with them since.

With thar said, I'd love to try out an 8 string beastie out of curiousity as much as anything. The only concern I would have is over the width of the neck. I sometimes have trouble with the width of the neck on my seven string guitars (although that's probably down to my crummy playing as much as anything :p).

It would be fun to be able to play something like this:

It's definitely a catch 22 situation though, isn't it? You probably wouldn't have a large amount of guitars available if it wasn't for those bands, and their popularity. But on the flipside, there is a large portion of people who were put off by them, and thinking that they were only good for that style of music. I guess it could be as much down to ignorance as anything, I remember one person I was talking to who actually thought you couldn't play open chords on a 7 string.

Yep, there's defintely a bit of both about it. There are elitists on both sides of the argument :).

The person you were speaking to might have tried to play an E chord in the same position as a 6 string guitar like this:
E
B
G
D-1
A-2
E-2
B-0
My brother did something similar before looking at me and announcing that the guitar was broken :).

Yeah, a likely explanation, but goes to show how people can write them off without really giving them a chance.

8 strings would be interesting, but man the guitar (Tosin Abasi's) is fugly! The body looks like a plank.

I like it. It's something different from conventional guitars.

I don't think it's that bad. It's certainly a different approach to the thousands of Gibson and Fender replicas that are out there.
