Best flash for a Eos400d for indoor conditions

Sorry if this has been posted before! I have been asked to take a few photos at a friends 40th Bday in the next few weeks, I have just the standard lens and built in flash on my Eos 4ooD, but to be honest I dont think the built in flash is great for indoor conditions such as for the likes of dark pubs or club houses.
Can anyone suggest a good rounder flash lens for taking photos at the party.
    Thanks in advance.

Ditto, the 480EX is grand for bounce flash with normal height ceilings, ie our own houses. I was using one on a 400D last month in Clontarf Castle where the ceiling height in the function room had to be at least 18-20ft. The 480EX did not perform well, had to increase flash exposure compensation to +2 and put the ISO to 400 before I could get decent exposures. I believe the 480 EXII is a bit more powerful but I would also recommend the 580EX II,

    580ExII

Consider a diffuser too with it, something like the Omni-bounce or even an elastic band and a piece of a plastic milk bottle.

Agreed. I just got one the other day and it's fantastic (got mine for about €350 on eBay).

Might as well go the distance, get the 480 and you'll regret it later.

Sounds good, did you buy from an eBay shop? Great price...

I bought one last month from this guy.

Worked out at about €330 delivered and arrived by registered post in 2 days.

not to daint kerso's rep here but i did try to buy a 70-200mm of him and sent him the payment right away. the money was unclaimed for two weeks. i emailed him every day about it, no reply. i got tired, rejected my payment and withing ten minutes got a personal email from him asking why and he set up a ebay strike against me.

totally put me off using him again, kea-photo all the way on ebay tbh.

is 580exII etc modular? as in can it be set to shed light constantly? and do they have sync input chords?

No, the 580EX II is a dedicated flash unit. It is only a strobe unit and has no modelling light.

It can be operated off camera and there are various options for doing this.
