Very Extreme Recruitment Process

Okay I thought I would put this up for my brother as he is going through a bit of mental torture at the moment.

He recently went for a job interview with a large UK based company and the process started like this:

1.) Did the initial interview with recruitment agency (No Problems)
2.) Did the Main interview, very long and hard (1hr30Mins exactly and passed)
3.) Went through a Pre-Employment Screening, a nightmare as it was outsourced to an eastern European firm and demanded just about every form on info possible back to his junior cert (He is 30) Passed although took 2 weeks and he got pretty paranoid.
4.) Did his medical although it was a different medical from most as the nurse in the practice indicated that most firms do a standard medical and a drugs screening, these lot wanted a full blood exam, I have never heard of this in a civilian firm yet.

Okay he was told by the Doctor that he was fit to work pending the outcome of the bloods, his results came back today and had indicated his cholesterol was high (5.5 to be precise) and that he had very high Alanine and Aspartate readings, this is basically a fatty deposit on his liver, but can be controlled and eradicated with a natural herb milk thistle)

My question is can he be failed on the above liver and cholesterol readings as he has been made jump through hoops for about 4 weeks and he is a Non Drinker/Occasional Smoker and no drug user, he is worried the above could be used to discriminate against him or is he just be over anxious ??

Doing an IT role within a hospital

As far as I'm aware, if it's a straightforward and treatable condition that won't impact his ability to do the job, there shouldn't be any problems.

The only potential setback I could forsee is them asking for this to be resolved before starting, causing a further delay to the process. They do seem pretty strict but hopefully they are reasonable!

Let us know how he gets on :)

was the hospital UK based ?

    Nope it is IRL based.

I have checked with a nurse who read the results and has advised me that this is not an issue and can be caused by antibiotics taken recently, also he was'nt told to fast as he was'nt told he was doing a blood test hence the readings again or inaccurate.

He is a person who worries a lot but to be put through all this and then told sorry your not superman would be a kick in the stones.

Thanks all for the information and advice

Other than the screening and blood tests this isn't extreme at all. I assume the later is only because he'd be working in a hospital.

Sounds extreme to me, especially considering it's an IT role!

My question is though, has your brother got the job or not? Is the job conditional on him getting his levels down, or something else?

One interview with the agency, and one with the employer?

That's crazy. The drug test I can understand but testing for illnesses is weird, i've never heard of that before in this country.

I would have thought it was the norm, rather than the exception. Otherwise they wouldn't take your blood pressure etc.

I don't think its that extreme. Not in certain fields, healthcare etc, and also with the increase of drug use etc.

Not that extreme. If I was an employer I would do the same. Employess who are often sick or long term sick cost money.

Totally bizarre, I have to say.

They sound like a fun bunch of people to work for already.

I've had a medical that included a full blood work-up. The blood tests were included for health checking (and of course legal risk mitigation) purposes due to the nature of the working environment. Given the increasingly litigious nature of the modern workplace I wouldn't be surprised if more and more screening processes tend this way.

it's more likely that the hospital are being this thorough because of some of the benefits they are offering as part of the package - eg pension, dis/ci cover
