We'll need a bit more information about the model number.

Does the monitor come on, anything displayed?
    Any beeping noises?

Some PC's will indicate their health or otherwise by a beep code.

Sounds like the power supply might be gone. It supplying enough power for fans and hard disk but not enough for chipset/cpu.

You have another power supply you can try it with?

If not then try resetting the cmos. Would need mobo spec to find out where it is if you don't know. Then try booting.

Finally if the above doesn't work then try:
Disconnect all hard disks, cd-roms, floppy etc, remove all pci cards, remove all but 1 stick of ram. Disconnect all fans except the cpu fan. Which should leave you with only cpu, gfx card (unless its onboard) and 1 stick of memory. This will lower the power draw from the psu somewhat. Now try boot up.

If it boots up now you know the psu is borked (but try slowly adding things back in anyway to make sure it wasnt something else you removed), if it still doesn't boot up it could still be the cpu/mobo but you've at least confirmed that its not one of the peripherals.

If it still doesn't work you could try borrow a psu off someone (if you dont have one) or bring it to a shop who can try to repair it. Not much else you can do unless you have parts you can try to swap in.

thats a strange one, i'd open it up and ensure everything was in its right place, i had a similar issue when one of my sticks of ram was half in, somehow it clipped itself out:rolleyes:

If your resetting the cmos, if i'm not mistaken i think that involves taking the little battery out of the motherboard(I'm not a hundred percent on this)

Clearing the cmos can be done in a few ways. Taking out the battery is one way, another is to change the jumper settings for a period of time before changing them back. It would all be in your mobo's manual.

Check your CMOS battery - I've seen systems hang like this when the CMOS battery was almost depleted (they usually last about 5 years). If your clock has been running slow lately, it is almost certainly the problem.

HP desktops usually have a button on the motherboard for resetting the CMOS.

I'd say try reseating the RAM first.

I had a similiar problem... After replacing/reseating everything still had the problrm. Turned out there wasn't enough thermal paste on my processor! Worth a try
