    Hi Guys,

    Roy Harris URL="http://www.royharris.com"]www.royharris.com[/URL 4th Degree Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Black Belt will be giving a one day seminar in NUI, Galway on Sunday the 16th of November.

    NUI, Galway, Sports Centre, 11 – 4 Sunday 16th of November.

    Previous seminars have always been straight BJJ, but this year we will be running a more MMA-focussed seminar (though with grappling emphasis)

    Here is a review of an MMA seminar that Mr Harris taught recently,

    ‘ This past weekend, Roy Harris taught an amazing 2-day MMA seminar in Middletown, Connecticut. The seminar attendees (from several states and two countries) were treated to a tremendous depth of information. Here’s a quick sampling:

    -kickboxing structure for MMA
    -drills for footwork and the mindset that makes these drills powerful
    -ringsmanship tactics from Savate
    -the subtleties of using the heels and balls of your feet to control distance
    -punching drills from western boxing, Savate, and Filipino boxing
    -a simple drill to develop devastating and unpredictable counterpunching
    -a very effective way to make your partner pay for trying to knee you in the clinch
    -how to feed mitts so that both partners improve their game tremendously
    -the exact distance to maintain, and how to maintain it
    -countless punch defenses and takedown defenses
    -controlling and attacking a BIG SWEATY GUY from the closed guard
    -takedown combinations from the clinch
    -landing a big right hand, right on the button, from 3 different angles
    -defending leg kicks from Boxe Francaise Savate
    -counters to the Double Neck Tie (thai clinch) that put you into the driver’s seat
    -transitioning from kicking range to the clinch without getting hit
    -landing a big leg kick each time you exit the clinch
    -strength training and conditioning exercises and routines for grappling and for MMA
    -drills for better visual and kinesthetic awareness when avoiding the Ground & pound
    -massive amounts of Q&A

    I could keep listing, but I think you get the idea. The one thing I heard over and over from attendees at the end of the weekend was how much the seminar exceeded their already high expectations.
    ‘ Chris

    Since that was a 2-day seminar, please respond if there are particular areas of interest and we will ensure Roy addresses these in this 1-day event.

    This is open to everyone, check www.harrisinireland.com , mail info@harrisinireland.com or ring 086 3492792 if you want more details.

    The following MMA athletes are under Roy Harris (first or second generation):
    Matt Stansell, Jeff Clark, Manny Rodriguez, Eddie Sanchez, Jason Lambert (Jason trains with Roy weekly these days), August Wallen, Lee Mein, Jason Day, and more.

    Just to maintain momentum on the thread..

    About half of these would particularly interest me:

    Yo Damo,

    Do you need to book a place beforehand or can we just turn up on the day?

    Kevin wouldn't ask about leg locks, he knows they are cheap.

    perhaps he is on a grappling budget

    But Mr. Leonard you're always telling me about the benefits of dropping in the clinch in search of heel hooks!
    What gives??

    Just to get back on topic,I've heard some great things about Harris,should be a solid seminar

    If you can make this seminar - I'll pay your entry fee!!!

    Hi Guys,

    Thanks for your interest . If you book and pay in advance (before the 1st of November) there is a reduced fee of €40 per person otherwise the cost of the seminar is €50 per person - with the current level of interest we are receiving we would recommend that you book and pay in advance, to ensure that your place is reserved.

    We will of course accept bookings up to the seminar date and on the day of the seminar, assuming spaces still exist.

    [There is a standing group discount rate of €40 per person for groups of 10 or greater; this applies up to the date of the seminar if paid in advance]

    On the day all entries; individual and group are €50 per person.

    (Also slight error in my original mail the seminar will run from 11-3 (4 hours in duration))

    Cheers

    As regards seminar content, I'd like him to stick to ground stuff as that is where he is strongest AFAIK, there are plenty of people to get stand-up stuff from in Galway, but BJJ black Belts don't wander in too often.

    Hi Guys,
    I am hoping to attend a seminar this November. There are 2 coming up that I was planning to go to - this one (Roy Harris) and one with Josie Murray from Donegal. However due to time constraints I am not sure if I can make both. I would appreciate feedback if people have had experience with both people and which they would attend if limited to one of the two. I have no experience of either instructor but have heard great things about both of them. I have never done any BJJ or grappling so any comments would be greatly approeciated. Thanks.

    Hi Paul,

    It would be incorrect for me to do a comparison of two instructors, first reason; I have never trained with Josie Murray and second I have a vested interested in the Roy Harris seminar, it would also be unfair to the seminar host of the other event as I am sure he/she wishes that their event will be a viable one as well.

    What I will do is post Roy Harris background, where he has taught and some other relevant info (sorry for long post);

    His background,

    Mr. Roy C. Harris is the owner and chief instructor at Harris International. Since 1981, he has actively studied twenty-five different styles of martial arts. He has obtained the following ranks and certifications:

    A Senior Full Instructorship in Jeet Kune Do Concepts / Filipino Martial Arts under Sifu Paul Vunak;
    A fourth degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Professor Joe Moreira; An honorary fourth degree black belt in Taihojutsu (Police Tactics) under Sensei Tom Snowden;
    An honorary third degree black belt in Sho Shin Ti modes Karate under Sensei Larry Kurtz;
    A Green Glove in Boxe Francaise Savate under Professor Salem Assli;
    A Basic Level Instructorship in Kalis Ilustrisimo under Punong Guro Tony Diego, Guro Romeo Macapagal and Thomas Dy Tang;
    An Associate Level Instructorship in Jun Fan Gung Fu and an Associate Level Instructorship in Filipino Martial Arts under Sifu Dan Inosanto;
    An Apprentice Level Four Instructorship in Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do Grappling under Sifu Larry Hartsell.

    To this present day, Mr. Harris continues his martial arts training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (under Professor Moreira), Kalis Ilustrisimo (under Guro Romy Macapagal), and Jeet Kune Do Concepts and Filipino Martial Arts under Sifu Dan Inosanto. Mr. Harris considers himself a lifelong student of the arts.

    Over the past twenty-one years, Mr. Harris has taught a variety of martial arts classes, women's self-defense workshops, and investigative and protective countermeasure courses at universities, vocational colleges, hospitals, shopping centers and numerous private businesses throughout Southern California, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. For an extensive list of who and where Mr. Harris has taught, please click on this link:

    http://www.royharris.com/corner/?id=1200

    Mr. Harris was nominated "Angel of the Week" by a San Diego radio station because of the 100+ self-defense workshops he taught to the general public, free of charge, back in the mid-1990's.

    Mr. Harris' work history, prior to opening his own martial arts academy, is varied. He worked as a police officer for four years, a private investigator for four years and a residential and hotel security officer for ten years. This list does not include all of the odd jobs he worked part-time, here and there (bodyguard etc.). Additionally, Mr. Harris spent eight years in the United States Air Force Reserve as a Medic.

    Mr. Harris is a proud member of the following associations:

    1. Punong Guro Tony Diego's KalisIl ustrisimo Association
    2. Sifu Dan Inosanto's International Instructors' Association
    3. Professor Joe Moreira's Jiu Jitsu de Brasil Association
    4. Sifu Rick Faye's Minnesota Kali Group

    Paul,

    All of this can be found on www.royharris.com

    Also if you wish to see some instructional clips featuring Roy, please check out youtube as there are many, also there are clips of him rolling with his students, competition clips with him v’s Jean Machado and clips of his friendly roll with Joe Moreira following his 4th Degree promotion etc. etc.

    Roy has a variety of dvd’s available, if you search for a review of these you will find some strong independent recommendations and reviews.

    On his earlier tapes (had to check last night:)) there are clips of him rolling with various people (in and out of competition, and of all sizes) while he was a blue, purple, brown and black belt.

    I hope that helps if you have any specific questions please email me.

    Thanks

    Damien

    Hi Damien,
    Thanks for that info. Makes for very impressive reading. I will have a look on youtube too.

    Given the nature of the course, am I right in assuming that an old Karate Gi would be best rather than a risking a good one? Thanks again.

    Paul.

    Shorts and a t shirt would be the way to go, although the prospect of seeing someone's Karate Gi torn to shreds as the day continues might be fun :)
