Moonscapes

    Hi,

I was out last night feeding the cats (they have their own little house !!!) and I saw the moon shining bright. Couldn't resist grabbing my camera.

This is the first one I printed - I used a fairly long exposure which burned out the details of the moon...

    2867004631_fc42807e79.jpg

This is one that had details of the moon but the rest was under exposed so I had to do a lot of work in PS to get some surrounding details...

The moon is so tempting, but like a cruel mistress she will frustrate!

I like the first for the sky detail. You need to cheat and combine one with the other.

    Mike.

    Great minds...

While you were replying, I was playing in PS.

This is just a quick scrappy merge - lasso'd the moon out of one into t'other...

If you convert the layer with moon detail into a mask, and paint out the area around it, rather than a cut and paste job, it'll turn out a lot smoother ;)

    Nice shot, though!

Agree with the above. Lovely shot though.

I will get to work on a clean merge at the weekend. Looks like it has good potential.

I spent a bit of time tidying this version up...

Will try to get a photo of a full moon for it.

Here's one I shot last year, its an HDR attempt. Worked out well to get the movement of the clouds and retain moer detail.

Lads I was doing the exact same thing last night! Got a few that look similar to these. Kind of like a nebula. In work now but will contribute my pic when I get home later on!

Its much better but it still feels a bit unnatural. Maybe rather than use the whole of the second moon select a bit leaving the outer edge using a light feather, then when you paste it into the first shot there will be less smoothing and therefor a more natural shot.

Two single exposures from the other night.

Not at all. I got a t-mount and adapter a while ago, but for some reason I just cannot get the scope to focus when I hook it all up. Don't know what the problem is.

Just for the record the exposure for the moon is 125th of a second at f8... almost exclusively... its sunlight after all :)

    hope that helps..

Thanks. I'm going to try for a better shot (will put a coat on next time as it was a bit chilly out). I'm not too keen on post processing, I only ever modify where necessary (exposure, brightness, blacks). This is the most PS work I've ever done on a photo.

I spotted it and ran in and grabbed my dad's 80-400mm sigma lens and got a couple of shots. Here are the 2 best ones i could manage.

Must try it again sometime and see if i can improve a bit and maybe go for a HDR shot next time

Are you cropping too far into the image? 88mm, what lens are you using?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,063 ✭✭✭GristlyEnd

    im using a panasonic fz50 bridge cam..Leica zoom 35-420mm
i cannot change lenses on this camera. and im only new to photography so im not sure about cropping. I imported it into lightroom , made some adjustments while messing with the LR settings and then cropped out most of the Black sky to show you more Moon detail. The original pic info shows as 88.8 mm in the metadata...whatever that is!!

i love the camera, its got a manual zoom and manual focus rings on the lens.

    Howth head.
I have actually bracketed exposures of this but havn't had
a chance to make a good HDR out of it without ghosting.

On my way back from work tonight I grabbed a pic of this Icebow around the moon... haven't seen one in ages.

Taken with the sigma 10-20, the only lens I had that was wide enough to capture it all properly. This thing was huge.

Forgot it was a full moon last night. Didn't see it until I left for work this morning. Bummer!

Will have to wait until the next one. Was going to throw the 2x onto my 200mm f/2.8 to get a nice close up.

Might try a few shots tonight with my 500mm f/8 mirror to see what it's like (very seldom use it - not too good).

Funny that, I had a contrail float past it when I was out around 12 last night. North-south as well which was even stranger.

Here's one from the lunar eclipse in March 2007:

    409317594_56325434a9.jpg

I had an SLR for about a month at that stage and didn't have a clue what the optimal settings for shooting the moon were :pac:

I'd love to get a plane going across the moon. Seen pics like that before, they're pretty cool.

I really need a better tripod. Tried to do a few shots of the moon last night and it was just far too wobbly - everything came out way too soft looking.
