I was having a look at this one, its a HP (which I have never used before). Are they any use? The laptop I have at the moment, I use for work and personal use. It has 80gigs and 512ram I think and it is now full (79gigs is...)

I want to get a new laptop for personal use, I mainly use it for music and general internet surfing. I will also use virtualdj and other taxing software like photoshop.

Anyone any advice? I would like a new one for around €400, would love to get one with 160 gigs and 2 meg Ram....

    Cheers!

    2GB Ram rather the MB;)

Does size matter to you/what size screen do you want?
How portable do you want it to be?

    Get yourself an advent 4211.

    1.6ghz atom processor,
    1gb ram, 80gb harddrive.
built in wifi (b/g) & bluetooth.
    3 X usb ports.
    5 in 1 card reader.

    bundled with XP.

    €370 pc world.

    plus its an umpc.

only downside is its not really a games machine.

no jesus don't get that 1gb is terrible these days, as is that processor, wait for an offer in ibood over next week or two if the osny is not your cup of tea,
you are paying abit extra to have the sony label but its far better value than that piece of crap.

as a rule dont go near pc world.

Dont think the Advent fits the bill since photoshop and other "intensive" programs are required.

EDIT: I think it should be noted that the advent 4211 is a netbook, and is aimed at those wanting web browsing and office on the go. The atom processor is designed to be efficient, not a power house, and for XP 1Gb is more than enough for everyday purposes.

Well on mine I am currently running Tomcat, Oracle 11g & a full copy of Adobe/ macromedia studio 8. so Despite what it was designed for its adequate for more intensive duties...

True but they do have the odd Diamond in the rough there now and again, so I would still cast the odd look into pc world.Especially since they were 30euro cheaper on the advent which I had been eying up for a series of mods(Touchscreen, internal HSDPA modem etc..)

As for Sony, I wouldn't Touch them as they are generally overpriced ****. Your buying a laptop not a fashion accessory you'll get more spec for your money else where..

That one worked out pretty cheap though right? I mean €480 for that spec was pretty good, regardless of the brand right?

    Cool. Panic over!

I was speaking to someone else who said that Windows Vista was overtaxing on RAM, it would use a gig of RAM on its own leaving 1 for the rest of the system?

yeah there is some truth in that, that is why there was such initial resistance to Vista,
you shouldn't have any problems though with that laptop, if you do it moving to xp is an option but stick with Vista for a while I say.

Cheers again. Really looking forward to getting it now. Also getting virtualdj for it.

Id also look at Kubuntu (a Ubuntu variant) if you're willing to venture outside the microsoft world, its defiantly worth a look.
