External Drive Help! 0_0

Well I dropped an external Maxtor drive (one in argos around 90 euro, 500GB....my fault for buying so cheap I suppose), so dropped the drive after putting a good whack of data on it. Got an error message in windows (can't remember, never took it down/googled!) and when I tried to reconnect, it wouldn't pick up any drive letter at all. The light comes on and you can hear it spin but nothing happens in My Computer.

I've tried to check in Device Manager - Disc Management to see if it was picking up the hardware at all. Mate suggested a program called spinrite, but seeing that I can't even get it connected I fail to see how this is going to work!

Anyone offer any advice or similar experiences? Thanks a mil.

Spinrite is a nice program but can't fix hardware/circuit board problems and is used more so to fix problems concerning bad sectors which are marked 'bad' and won't be available for the OS to use.

It's also a DOS program which will probably be able to 'see' the HD connected even if Windows doesn't 'see' it.

It's my opinion that if you have no important data on it then you should give up on it. You may get it working but you'll never be able to rely on it.

If you want to get your data back though I'd try programs like spinrite or my sugestion, HDD REGENERATOR, which has saved me many times in the past.

Yeah, I might also mention that I tried to be a smart-*ss and open the yoke up. I had the full intention of plugging it in as a slave drive, but the yoke is SATA............another four letter acronym came to mind...."RTFM".

    Thanks for your help.
