The winter is often the best time! A crisp day, some of the cut crops like beans are more attractive to pigeons after they have been on the ground for a while and soaked up moisture. As for permission, its like asking a fisherman to tell you where his best stretch of river is!!! You only get one or two good days shooting from a field and nobody knows where the field are until the pigeons start to feed. If a pigeon shooter is planning on going out he will be eyeing up a field for weeks and keeping it a close guarded secret. Last thing you want is somone else shooting youre hotspot!!!

The best advice is watch for pigeons feeding and by feeding I mean a constant stream of pigeons into a field and most importantly.. walk into the field and see if the return after you scare them. If not they are not really "on" the field and they will all bugger off to another field after a few shots! Then go ask the farmer for permission. Understandably this isnt always successful as strangers with guns arent welcolmed onto farmers land (despite what you might hear), so its always good to network, get contacts and once you get your foot in the door you can use the farmer that has give you permission to vouch for you.

On the other hand if you just want to get a few shots off, look for permission at a wood and roost shoot in the evening. You dont need any gear just cammo and somewhere the pigeons will be flying to. Its all about the recognissance. And remember... once you do find that golden field... dont tell anyone!!!!!
