Self defence course

I have had an enquiry about running a self defence course or pointing some staff from a school for troubled kids towards an appropriate course. They need to learn how to cope with an ever increasing level of agression and frustration displayed by the kids in the school.

The school is based in Carysfort avenue, Blackrock just off the N11 and is a school for those with learning difficulties, not profound difficulties but many of the kids come from foster homes and would be slow of learning. Each year seems to offer greater challenges to the teachers and other staff at the school. It has reached a point whereby I have been asked about self defence for the staff and it came to a head last week when a nine year old pulled a knife on one of the adults and was eventually taken away by the Gardai.

Can anyone offer a course to suit these staff? I am not sure whether this will turn out to be an official course request by the school or whether a few of the staff members would attend one of the local courses referred by me! Obviously it can't be the bash and dash approach, raise your awareness and avoid the trouble kind of course, but more on the lines of calming the kids down, isolating them and at worst maybe restraining techniques. All of this many of us could teach but I feel that this kind of course should only be offered to those who have experience in this field? Eg Garda or prison officer instruction!

If any of you offer courses which may help the staff or can point me in the right direction, please drop me a mail pm at ymaa.ie

    Thanks

The confidence needed to stand up to bullies and not be intimidated by aggressive people comes with plenty of physical training like boxing judo and similar martial arts. Short Self-defence courses, regardless of their intensity can only point out some common sense soft-skills. Anything of a technical nature is unreliable under stress and will probably be forgotten. Regular training builds confidence is my only input to this.

Your looking ar dealing with someone who you have a duty of care to. As you said no "bash and dash" (have nt heard that phrase in awhile).

You would need something along the same lines as what is needed when dealing with patients with mental illnesses. Thats not a reflection on the kids but the priorites are the same. You could try contacting some of those organisations and see what they say. But they ll give you the usual 2 day course that only shows enough that you cant sue the organisation because you ve been "trained".
