which would you get if money was really really tight a powerbook g4 or a macbook? both 2nd hand and average specs. would i be a fool to get a powerbook when a macbook costs a couple hundred extra? its probably gonna be only for internet, writing assignments etc. jesus i might even look at the G3 powerbooks! what you think?

well if money is tight money is tight ...

A few hundred extra means money isn't that tight ?

If money was really tight I'd probably pick up a cheap xp laptop for 100quid .. throw ubuntu and open office on it. Saving myself the cost of M$ office and of XP and any licensing issues.

However you're asking about macs and well I'd probably say if you can go to it get the macbook though if you really are only using it for wordprocessing and browsing its probably overkill.

It depends how long you want to hang on it - Intel Macs are gaining more and more support, with various Leopard applications requiring an Intel processor. There are some rumors that the next version of Mac OS X, Snow Leopard may drop PPC support altogether. MacBooks also are not as picky as Powerbooks about RAM upgrades and you'll probably have an easier job finding replacement parts, etc if needed.

If it's only for the internet and writing assignments then the G4 PowerBook is ideal. What size is the screen? :)

Two of my friends have bought 2nd hand ibooks, they're very happy with them. I bought a new MacBook in March and I'm just ok with it. I just wanted portability and to try apple, I think now I should have gotten a 2nd hand older apple. My next purchase I'll probably get an apple but as far as the laptop itself I'll look into it.

Also I've had a few issues with its hardware see my post here , http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055380036

    Good luck

i'm have a PB G4 12" that I use as a secondary computer (it stays permanently in the office....while my main Mac is at home)

It's running the latest and greatest in terms of software - leopard 10.5.5, office 2008 etc.... All that machine is used for is an internet, word processing and ftp machine. It works lovely! My only bit of advice would be to max out the RAM - mine maxed at 1.25Gb - makes a big difference!!

If budget is tight and you want bang for your buck - the PB G4, be it 12" or 15", represents a good option.

Good stuff, i feel better for buyin it now. Its a 12". ideal for carrying around. haven't got it yet but fingers crossed won't be too long waiting;) i suppose i'll get more ram but have to see if it needs a new battery first.

my first mac btw. was looking at flickr, jesus people love their macs. ibooks in particular!

sedohre: pity to hear about yours. hope you didn't have to spend too much on it getting fixed. read about all the problems with the g3 and some g4s video chip coming loose and all that so fingers crossed it doesn't apply to me. although saying that there are loads of resources on how to fix them.
