Port mapping with Airport Express

How can I open a port in the Airport Express? I'm using Leopard, and it's an old Airport Express, one of the originals.

I've been through reset hell for the last day-and-a-half, and finally set up a new version of my wireless network, which is working fine, but can't see any place for port mapping.

Various online sites talk about using Airport Admin Utility, but I don't think Leopard has this.

There's an Airport Utility in your Applications/Utilities folder if you're using Leopard. At least there is on mine anyway.

I'm not too sure the standard Airport Utility allows configuration of port settings on an Airport Express though. I took a look at mine and there are no settings for port forwarding at all - of course, that could just be the utility hiding settings which are not relevant, since I have an Airport Extreme on my network (where I can map ports) and the Airport Express is in bridge mode to it.

In the Help instructions, it says to open the Airport Utility and set the ports manually. It gives instructions for this. They don't work.

I rang Apple and got a very nice guy who couldn't help unless I paid for telephone support - which seemed a bit ripe to me since Apple's own Help doesn't have correct instructions. He told me the Help instructions and the Airport Utility were designed for the Airport Extreme. Why, since Apple still sells the Airport Express?

My attempts to work the Help instructions left me offline for a day-and-a-half and trying to set the thing up - losing valuable work hours. Finally I set it up (but without opening ports) by nuking the earlier network and setting up a new one.

    Still no ports, though.

The Airport Express device is odd to me, I have an Airport and Airport Extreme Base-stations. Neither have NAT facilities or anything to allow port adjustment. Then again, neither have direct access to the internet other than through my router which does have these facilities. AFAIK the airport units are purely wireless receivers which bridge to your network.

What exactly is your setup and requirements ? Maybe we can assist that way ?!

The Airport Extreme does have port mapping settings - Airport Utility => Manual Setup => Advanced => Port Mapping. However, the Airport Express does not have these options so you might be right that you can't adjust port settings (at least I can't see a way with Airport Utility). I have my Express in bridge mode to the Extreme, but I thought you could use the Express as a wireless access point/travel router too? This seems to be the way Luckat is trying to use it and under those circumstances, you'd assume there'd be a way to adjust port settings... but it seems there isn't.

Mine doesn't have the WAN port connected so I'm guessing that that setting isn't available because of this. The only option available in the Advanced Tab is Logging & SNMP for me.

I managed to forward ports in my AirPort Express ok. Not sure if it's affected upload yet.... time will tell.

Hmm. Opened Azureus and no dice - still that little yellow face. Anyone know what port Azureus likes open?

Should the TCP and UDP ports be different?

For future reference, this is what worked:

1 With the Airport transmitting as normal (that is, not plugged into the Mac by Ethernet, but into the IBB router), click on Airport Utility in Applications/Utilities
2 Select the Airport Express image on the left. Click the Manual button. In the resulting screen, and in the System-Prefs-looking toolbar above, select Network on the right, and then in the screen that then appears, select Port Mapping. Make sure that this is clear.
3 in the Airport tab in that Sys-Prefs-looking pane, enter your computer's MAC address (to make sure your network is private).
4 Update the settings, when it says "You can now close this window", do so.

5 Set the desired port in both Lighthouse and Transmission (eg use port 55555 for both Public and Private Ports in Lighthouse, and also 55555 in Transmission).

6 In Transmission, toggle the little grey turtle icon at the bottom left of the screen on and off to jog it into uploading as well as downloading. (Make sure in the flowery icon beside that that it's set to unlimited upload and download, or whatever you prefer in both.)

Is it possible your ISP is port throttling ? I know Clearwire (spit !!) did and I believe several of the Wireless providers do as well.

How do you connect to the 'net ? Are you in apartments where the management company have some kind of proxy server installed ?
If it's a phoneline based service like Eircom etc. have you opened the ports on the router ?
