I am going to the US later this year and am thinking of buying a laptop or a notebook computer in NY.

Is this a good idea when price, specification but also warranty are factored in?

Have any of you done this? If so, what did you buy and how did it work out for you?

    Thanks,

Yeah, I bought one there a few years ago.

I wouldn't do it again, when something went wrong on the laptop I couldn't get any support or replacement parts because even though I had bought it as new it was actually refurbished.

I didnt buy a laptop in NY but I did buy a camera and psp. I wouldnt be against it, but remember the exchange rate is only 70c to 1 dollar these days, so its not a great exchange rate. If there was any way of buying a dell over there Id go for it, but I think their delivery only. tbh I wouldnt bother myself, buy one here for the warranty and stuff

If it were me and I had the time I wouldn't buy one in Manhattan: think of the markups. The USA in general though: absolutely.

edit: When did the Euro do that!?

I bought a cheap Acer for my mother in Best Buy, Mount Jordan, just north of the Bronx. Working perfectly and a snip at just over 300 euro or so at the time (late July).

Would you ever p*ss off. I actually have a Dell desktop not that its any of your business and Dell's plant is more desktop oriented than laptop.

To those that made constructive responses, thanks.

I bought a HP Notebook over in Boston back in June, best thing I ever bought. $750 and the spec is pretty good, I also have a 1 year warranty, doesn't matter that I bought it in the US they will ship to Ireland etc..

I'm looking to get myself a new laptop over there at the start of November.

Would places away from Manhattan be a better option?
BH Photo seem to have some fairly good deals.
Might be out at Amityville some day if there's anywhere decent out that way.

Got myself a lovely Toshiba Sateillite there in July. Think it worked out at €560 altogether.. with a 1 year worldwide warranty. Wouldnt have gotten the spec here for the price. I got mine in J&R

Would it not bother you that the plug would be different? I suppose you could just buy an adaptor and keep it plugged into it, but that would annoy me.

You could also snip the wire and fit on a 3-pin plug, but i would hate to risk that.

Are you visiting NY or having it shipped? Does it still really work out cheaper including shipping?

As for warranties, when we were in NY, my boyf bought alot of power tools. Now his warranty for them still stands, if anythin happens its still valid, even though were not in the country anymore. I dont know if its the same for computers, but I would imagine that its alot of hassle having to get in touch with someone, organise everything... Especially with them being in a different time zone, unless the helpdesks are 24-7, you would be calling when they are gone home...or maybe they have an irish phone number?? Also the inconvenience of not having any immediate support, as a previous poster said, that would annoy me, especially if I wanted it fixed quickly!!

I am visiting New York later in the year and, as money is pretty tight, I thought it would be an opportunity.

Personally, I would buy it, sure you can always insure it under your home insurance, and if anything awful happens to it you can claim it from the insurance on your home. As far as I am aware it wont affect your premiums too much to add a laptop/report a claim on it.

HP have worldwide warranty cover on their laptops. And excellent warranty support I might add. Acer allow you to buy extended warranty cover in your home market shortly after purchase.

I got an extended 3 year Acer warranty cover because, unlike a PC, should anything go wrong, it won't be as simple to swap in and out a card. My previous HP laptop developed a display fault luckily just a week before the one year warranty expired. HP support were excellent and it was collected repaired and delivered.

HP have worldwide warranty cover on their laptops.

Any idea if Lenovo laptops have an international warranty?
Getting a lot of mixed info when I google it.

afaik dell have ww warranty. I was considering it as well, but the dell studio 17" that I was considering was only €100 cheaper on the Dell US site for the same spec. Not worth the hassle and if I can get a 10% discount code they'll be the same price.
