Flies congregating under trees?

Only struck me today that I have no idea why it is that whenever one walks under a low hanging tree of a certain height and leafspan, there's a group of flies there. Anyone know why this is? It doesn't seen to be a nutrient thing from casual observation, but I could be wrong :)

If they are Drosophilia Melanogaster ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Drosophila_melanogaster_-_side_(aka).jpg ) they are probably organizing a Trade Union to strike for better pay in the research labs.
