Play.com Euro Conversion Rate

Where are they going with their Sterling - Euro conversion rate? For example Transformers is £15.99, which converts to €20.11. But Play are asking for €22.49 for it! This Euro-bashing has gone on long enough, raise your blue banner with the stars in it high and proud and shop for movies somewhere else.

I cant really complain about play tbh.

Their prices are generally good, they are 100% reliable for me, delivery is usually fast and they dont charge for it. I can live with a couple of euros off on the conversion.

Better than Amazon where you buy an 8 quid dvd and by the time you get to checkout with taxes and delivery you need a fvcking mortgage to buy the thing.

I know its old news but..the exchange rate is pretty good at the mo so its more noticeable. OK Play is very good but this is conversion rate business is not playing the game. Transformers blu-ray is only €2.50 less than HMV.. WTF? Usually there's €20 difference. In fairness Sendit is cheaper for that movie anyway on Blu-Ray, but have they sent it to me? No, just mails saying its out of stock and they're getting it from their supplier, even though its didn't say out of stock when I ordered it. This wouldn't happen with Play.

the conversion rate mightnt seem much when your just buying a dvd, but buy a few things and it all adds up. I dont bother with play anymore cos of it.

VAT & deliver charge differences?? They may have the delivery cost hidden in the currency conversion to still be able to say "Free Delivery"

Play are Jersey based, where there is no VAT. They are definitely burying the postal costs in the exchange rate, which means they shouldn't be claiming free delivery.

I always check around in the various sites before buying any DVDs and games now, and go with whichever is cheaper. That used to invariably be Play, but not any more.

There are many others that are often cheaper than Play, Sendit and Asda both post to Ireland for free, and let you pay in Sterling. Mymemory.co.uk also do free delivery, though their range is limited.

Preordered FarCry 2 with Sendit.com thanks to a better price than Play.com, the release date was 24th Oct, but it didn't dispatch until the 27th. (and I haven't received it so far)
While Play may be a little more expensive, they're still a ****load more professional.
Decided to pay a little extra and order Fallout 3 from Play - this dispatched 4 days BEFORE the release date.

Sometimes shopping around for the best price doesn't benefit you as much as you think it does

I would think £15.99 would cost me around €21.50-€22, where did you get your exchange rate, I hope to christ it was not XE!, not even the head of the secret society running all the world banks can get the XE rate, go to your bank and try gettin £15.99 in cash for €20.11

Where would you suggest? most places charging in euro are often a lot more expensive.

Play deliver from Jersey, check out the jersey post office website online, it is cheaper to send to the UK from jersey than to ireland, and I expect they get further discounts due to the greater bulk going to the UK. Or do you really think there are volunteer postmen in Jersey?

I've just e-mailed them on the issue

Don't forget that Play's sterling prices include UK VAT at 15%, while their Euro prices do not ---> even more of a rip off (and leaving you liable to VAT here).

    OP's example:
    stg price £15.99
    VAT excl stg price = £13.90 = €15.44
VAT excl euro price = €22.49....a 46% markup.

Play don't read emails. Even if they do, they won't care.

    Same issue,
    16698728s.jpg
Lenovo G555 £329.99 (should be €376) is coming up as €462.

Whats the story here and is there anything I can do about it?

What is? The laptop or this thread? Either way I just want to find out is there anyway anyone has found to get Play to offer a more accurate conversion rate?

When you go to buy a high value item from play, you really get shafted.

For example, HTC desire sim free: £399.99 stg which equates to €459.99 based on the exchange rate.

    Price on play.com: €559.99

    **** that!

It's going for £299.99 on amazon but they won't fricken deliver to Ireland.

    Whats the deal with that??

I think the only way would be getting it sent to a friend in the UK/up north. There used to be some services where you could order stuff, get it sent to a depot up north and then have it forwarded onto here.

There is no "conversion rate" to get more accurate, there are different price structures in different regions. I have never heard people saying levi's use an "inaccurate exchange rate", when they see the same jeans at 1/3-1/4 the price in the US.

Amazon have restrictions on lots of items

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=524836

I think some people have emailed them and been allowed to buy stuff though -(I would not waste my time emailing play)

There shouldn't be a problem shipping a sim-free HTC Desire from Amazon, provided you buy from Amazon themselves and not a Marketplace seller.

I found it from Amazon directly for £393.49 (or £405 inclusive of Irish VAT) - see here!

I added it to my cart fine.. you just need to make sure to click 'Add To Basket' beside 'Amazon' in the Sellers List.

Seeing as Play.com wont deliver electronics to ireland its all a bit irrelevant isnt it?
