start up disc for mac

    Hi,

    just wondering if anyone knows if its possible to use a usb external hard drive as a start up disc for mac?. It doesnt have firewire.

    On an Intel Mac, yes. Reformat the drive in Disk Utility and set the partition table to GUID.

    It's not possible on a PPC Mac out of the box. I've heard of hacks to enable it though, if you feel like Googling :)

    Note that not every drive will work. I've tried many, many times to boot from my Freecom USB drive and it's just a non-runner. But I have booted from any other USB drive no hassle.

    I've just reconfigured by WD external to act as a boot drive and I'm running OSX on it right now :D

    another question...did either of you use any software to create the boot disc. Im looking at carbon copy and superdrive, but im not sure. Time machine wont create a boot disk right?

    I used Superduper, it does everything required in one click.

    No, Time Machine won't do that. It'll let you restore your backup but you will have to supply a boot disk of some kind.

    In fact the best tool for creating a boot disk is via the good old Disk Utility.
