    Hi,

Does anyone know of a time limit to teleworking? My employer kindly allowed me to telework but is claiming a 6 month limit. Ive no idea where they get this from.

    Thanks!

Is there something in your contract about teleworking?

If not, be grateful you are even allowed telework.

Oh, Im gratefull allright. I was just wondering about the 6 months limit.
They do have a work-from-home policy but it only covers temporary type working. The don't have a long term teleworking poilcy

They don't need to get it from anywhere, it's completely arbitrary and up to the company. Best ask them why they might have that rule in place.

They may need to retrain you, or need some way to check how you do.

I think you hit the nail on the head there. I believe they are using the 6 months to cover their assess in case I loose my mind and start watching tv all day at home instead of working.

I dont blame them, its risky letting staff go out into the wild for months at a time and they could be liable if I went off the rails.

I'm peeved though that they dont just tell me out straight, they have already used tax as an excuse, I did some ground work and assured them that was ok. Then they changed their story and are using insurance as an excuse and wont provide me with any information around the supposed insurance clause.

There could be health and safety considerations as well, as it is effectively your workplace so would have to be kitted out as such.

There are, I had a job where I was classed as a "mobile" worker, meaning that I could be working from home, on client sites or in the office.

It was partially classed as mobile working as if I was classed primarily as a teleworker, then my work's Health and Safety would have been required to visit my home I *think* once or twice a year to ensure that I had appropriate equipment (desk, chair etc etc) and insurance to cover my working from home.

That may be what the six month limit is, so that they do not have to undertake this?

If I had to guess I'd say that teleworking opportunities have been introduced due to demand but some of senior management and/or HR are not entirely convinced and want to restrict it slightly. I'd suggest that the best move on your part would be to do it for a few months and assuming it proves a success try to push a little more for reasons and extend the agreement.

On a slightly-related note, I'd say that if you're going to be teleworking full time that you should make sure you have a proper home office that is only used for work stuff. This way you'll find it a lot easier to keep a working discipline and a lot easier to switch off in the evening.

That all makes a lot of sense. Thanks guys.

On the subject of Environment, Ive got a great little set up in the loft. A proper desk etc and no tv. Coffee grinder down in the kitchen for my 11 am break :)
